Detectives in Kirinyaga East Sub-County have arrested the prime suspect behind the shocking kidnapping of Gatuto Primary School Headteacher, Joshua Kerai, which sent shockwaves through the education community earlier this month.
According to a statement shared by DCI on X on Monday 10th November 2025, the suspect, identified as Patrick Gacoki Muembe, was apprehended after an intense manhunt led by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Muembe is believed to be the mastermind of the November 4, 2025 abduction, which occurred in Kagumo, Kirinyaga County.
According to investigators, the daring kidnapping unfolded when Muembe and two accomplices — still at large — ambushed the unsuspecting school head as he left a local meeting. The gang forcefully bundled Kerai into a maroon Toyota Ractis, registration number KCP 816F, and drove him around for hours in what police have described as a “harrowing ordeal” for the victim.
The ordeal ended when Kerai was found abandoned and disoriented inside the same vehicle at Sahara Petrol Station in Kutus Town. A good Samaritan who noticed his distress immediately rushed him to Kerugoya Catholic Hospital, where he was treated for trauma and exhaustion.
Following the disturbing incident, detectives launched a multi-agency operation, meticulously tracking the suspects using forensic evidence, intelligence reports, and CCTV footage from nearby locations. Their efforts eventually paid off when they traced Muembe’s hideout in Kutus, leading to his dramatic arrest after several days in hiding.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that Muembe is a habitual criminal, with past links to serious offenses including motor vehicle theft, stock theft, robberies, and shop break-ins across Kirinyaga and neighboring counties.
Authorities have confirmed that Muembe is currently in police custody as detectives intensify efforts to locate his two accomplices, believed to be part of an organized criminal network targeting education officials and businesspeople in the region.
The DCI has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or activities, especially around schools and marketplaces. Meanwhile, the Kirinyaga County education fraternity has expressed relief, lauding the swift response by police in capturing the prime suspect.
Investigations are ongoing, and Muembe is expected to be arraigned in court once police conclude their probe.
