Nairobi, Kenya – December 26, 2024 – The National Police Service (NPS) has issued an official statement refuting allegations of police involvement in the abduction of individuals across Kenya. In a press release signed by the Inspector General of Police Kenya, Douglas Kanja Kirocho, the service emphasized its constitutional mandate, clarifying that its role is to arrest suspected offenders, not to abduct citizens.

Clear Procedures for Arrests Outlined

The Inspector General of Police Kenya reiterated that all arrests must adhere to the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) Standing Orders, which mandate proper documentation in the Occurrence Book (OB). According to these guidelines, every arrest must be followed by either an arraignment in court or the suspect’s release if the legal threshold is not met.

“The procedure as per the Service Standing Orders informs that all arrests be recorded in the Occurrence Book for subsequent arraignment in a court of law, otherwise, the suspects be released from Police custody if they fail to meet the procedural threshold,” stated Inspector General Kanja.

The IG firmly denied claims that any police station in the country is holding individuals reported as missing or abducted.

Public Urged to Stop Spreading Misinformation

While Kenya prides itself on being a democratic nation that guarantees freedom of expression, the National Police Service warned against the spread of false and unverified information that could damage the reputation of law enforcement.

“Whereas Kenya is a democratic country that guarantees freedom of expression, freedom not only comes with certain limitations but should at all times be exercised with utmost responsibility,” the statement read.

The IG appealed to the public to refrain from propagating “false, fabricated, malicious, distasteful, misinformed, and unverified information aimed at tarnishing the image of the National Police Service.”

Independent Investigations Underway

The statement confirmed that the ongoing allegations are being investigated by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and other independent agencies. The IG urged individuals with credible information about any missing persons to report to the nearest police station for proper action.
