Stolen Meru Cattle Recovered After Dramatic Isiolo Gunfight

A coordinated multi-agency security operation has resulted in the full recovery of livestock that had been stolen in Meru County, following a dramatic pursuit and confrontation with suspected bandits in neighboring Isiolo County. The operation, confirmed through a statement by the National Police Service (NPS) on X, underscores the government’s continued efforts to curb livestock theft and restore security in pastoral regions.

According to the NPS, officers drawn from the National Police Service (NPS) and the National Police Reservists (NPR) successfully tracked down and recovered 22 head of cattle that had earlier been reported stolen at Mutuati Police Station in Meru County. The recovery followed intelligence-led operations that traced the stolen animals across county borders into Isiolo.

The breakthrough came in Kampi Samaki area of Garbatula Sub-County, Isiolo County, where security officers intercepted the suspects believed to be responsible for the theft. What began as a tracking mission quickly escalated into a tense and dangerous encounter when the suspected bandits engaged the officers in a fierce exchange of gunfire.

Police reports indicate that the officers responded with coordinated precision, overwhelming the suspects. Faced with the superior firepower and tactical response by the security team, the bandits fled the scene, abandoning the stolen livestock as they escaped into the surrounding terrain.

Following the confrontation, officers secured the area and confirmed that all 22 cattle were recovered alive. This latest recovery brought the total number of animals retrieved in the case to 52, marking a complete recovery of the entire stolen herd. The livestock were later escorted under tight security and safely handed back to their rightful owner, bringing relief to the affected family.

Livestock theft remains a major challenge in parts of northern and eastern Kenya, often fueling inter-community tensions and violent conflict. Security agencies have repeatedly noted that stolen animals are frequently moved across county boundaries to evade detection, making inter-agency cooperation critical to successful recovery operations.

In its statement, the National Police Service emphasized that the success of the operation was the result of seamless collaboration between regular police officers and National Police Reservists, who play a vital role in local intelligence gathering and terrain familiarity in remote areas.

“The National Police Service reassures the public that security operations within the region remain robust and sustained,” the statement read, signaling continued vigilance against banditry and organized livestock theft.

The NPS further called on communities to work closely with security agencies by sharing timely and credible information that can help prevent crime or enable rapid response when incidents occur. According to the Service, public cooperation has proven to be a decisive factor in disrupting criminal networks and recovering stolen property.

As security operations continue across the region, the NPS reiterated its commitment to protecting life and property, assuring Kenyans that officers remain on high alert to respond to threats and criminal activity. The Service also warned criminals that sustained operations will continue, and those involved in banditry and livestock theft will be pursued relentlessly.

The successful recovery not only restores livelihoods but also sends a strong message that coordinated security efforts, supported by community cooperation, can effectively counter crime and enhance stability in vulnerable regions.
