Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Gladys Boss Shollei, celebrated Christmas in an adventurous style by hiking the scenic Keiyo Escarpment at Changach. Shollei, known for her vibrant personality and strong political presence, shared her festive experience with her followers on the X platform (formerly Twitter).
Dressed in sporty attire — black shorts, black socks, black running shoes, and a light purple blouse paired with a cape — Shollei exuded joy and resilience during the challenging trek. Accompanied by two companions, she embarked on the hike from the top of the Keiyo Escarpment at Changach down to the Kerio Valley at Kapchemwor and finally ended at Sego Club.
Taking to her X account, Shollei wrote: “With a thankful heart, I undertook an epic Christmas Eve hike from the top of the Keiyo escarpment at Changach to the bottom of the Kerio valley at Kapchemwor to Sego Club. 6 hours 32 mins it took me. My grandparents would do it in 2 hours tops. I was humbled. Merry Christmas.”
Social Media Reactions to Shollei’s Christmas Hike
While Shollei’s hike showcased her dedication to physical wellness and connection with nature, her post quickly attracted a mix of praise, criticism, and calls to action from netizens.
One user encouraged environmental conservation, stating:
“That place would look better with trees growing. Encourage someone there to plant a tree, even a Christmas tree, to conserve the environment.”
Others applauded her commitment to fitness and her ability to enjoy Christmas actively:
“Good exercise kiongozi. Typically under 18. Merry Christmas to you and all your loved ones,” wrote Elvin Kirui.
However, not all reactions were positive. Some users seized the moment to voice their frustrations with the government, highlighting ongoing issues such as abductions and economic struggles:
“Christmas can’t be merry with the present inhumane regime in power! What happened, Boss? I regret voting for a satanic regime! I am sorry, Kenyans,” one user lamented.
Another commenter added:
“How does it feel enjoying Christmas as a mother while some families are in agony with the abduction of their sons courtesy of the government keen on doing evil and hating criticism? It’s a matter of time. It’s boiling nicely, and this time round, I’m ready to restore my country.”
Calls for Accountability and Representation
The conversation also took a political turn, with users urging Shollei to use her influential position in the National Assembly to address pressing issues affecting citizens, particularly in her home region, Uasin Gishu County.
Kevin Kirui commented:
“Now condemn the abductions being carried out under your watch.”
Kimosop Mike added:
“Tell the president that when the people become immune to abductions, he will have no country to rule.”
Another user echoed the same sentiments:
“Lucky you! While you were away hiking, #RutoMustGo government was busy abducting us as usual. Just let him know that he won’t abduct all of us. Everything has its end. Even Hitler came to an end.”
Despite the political criticisms, some netizens took the opportunity to highlight the unemployment crisis in Uasin Gishu County and urged Shollei to advocate for more job opportunities for the youth.
“Use your influence in the National Assembly to fight for Uasin Gishu County jobs for youth,” one user suggested.
Shollei’s Role in Addressing Regional Challenges
As a prominent leader from Uasin Gishu County, Shollei holds significant influence in national conversations about policy and governance. Residents and supporters are now looking to her not just for inspiring hikes and personal stories but for tangible solutions to regional challenges, including youth unemployment and the perceived erosion of civil liberties.
Uasin Gishu County, a region rich in agricultural potential and known for producing top-tier athletes, faces rising unemployment rates and economic challenges. Young people in the region have long called for increased opportunities, job creation programs, and investment in skill development initiatives.
As the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Shollei is well-positioned to advocate for increased funding and policy changes that could address these concerns directly.
Balancing Leadership and Personal Moments
While Shollei’s Christmas hike showcased her personal commitment to health and adventure, it also brought to light the challenges public figures face when sharing personal milestones online. Every post becomes a platform for citizens to express their grievances, concerns, and hopes.
In the spirit of leadership, many Kenyans will be watching to see if Shollei addresses the calls made on her X post, particularly regarding unemployment in Uasin Gishu County and the ongoing public outcry over abductions.
As the festive season comes to an end, one thing remains clear: Gladys Shollei’s Christmas hike wasn’t just a personal achievement but a reflection of the deep connection between leadership and public accountability in Kenya.
