On Jamhuri Day 2024, President William Ruto delivered a powerful speech addressing key milestones in his administration’s efforts to improve healthcare access, tackle economic challenges, and counter misinformation. His remarks highlighted progress in the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), Taifa Care registration, and the ongoing transformation of Kenya’s economy.

Healthcare Milestones: 11 Million Kenyans Registered Under SHIF

President Ruto celebrated a significant achievement in healthcare reform, announcing the successful transition of 5.6 million citizens from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to SHIF and registering 11 million Kenyans under the new scheme in just two months.

“This means that, in just two months, 11 million Kenyans who previously lacked access to healthcare services are now registered, with the registration process going on full steam in every part of Kenya,” Ruto emphasized.

He lauded Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Bomet, Embu, and Lamu counties for leading the registration efforts. However, he urged residents of Marsabit, Garissa, Mandera, West Pokot, and Turkana to intensify mobilization and take advantage of the transformative program.

Economic Progress: Lower Costs, Better Output

Ruto countered criticism of his administration’s economic policies, stating that the cost of basic food commodities has decreased and inflation has gone down. He also highlighted increased agricultural productivity and improvements in service delivery through programs like Taifa Care.

“When we say that the cost of basic food commodities has come down, it is a fact. When we say that inflation has gone down, it is a fact,” he asserted.

Ruto further pointed to the success of affordable housing projects, which will soon deliver keys to new homeowners. Thousands of jobs have also been created for electricians, plumbers, teachers, health workers, and digital professionals.

Addressing Fake News and Critics

In a strong rebuke to detractors, President Ruto called on Kenyans to reject misinformation aimed at undermining his administration’s achievements.

“Jamhuri Day is also a moment for Kenyans to expose the fake news aimed at discrediting our ambition, sabotaging our hope, and seeking to dampen our resolve,” he said.

Ruto encouraged constructive engagement based on facts, urging critics to recognize the tangible improvements being made.
