KAKAMEGA, Kenya — What was meant to be a family introduction meeting turned into a horrifying incident in Shivagala, Kakamega South Sub-County, after a woman allegedly poured boiling water on her husband and his 16-month-old child moments after he introduced his newly married second wife.
According to a police report filed at Malaika Police Station, the shocking incident occurred on June 1, 2026, at approximately 10:00 a.m., leaving two victims with severe burn injuries and sparking a police manhunt for the suspect.
The report states that Danston Isundwa Mmbehi was at his home together with his wife, Mary Mmbone Khalechi, when a woman identified as Fransisca Makhokha arrived carrying a young child.
In what appeared to be an unexpected revelation, Danston reportedly introduced Fransisca to Mary as his newly married second wife. He further informed his first wife that he and Fransisca had a child together, who was already 16 months old.
According to the police account, Mary initially appeared calm and welcomed the visitors into the house. She then reportedly excused herself and went to the kitchen, seemingly to prepare tea for the family gathering.
However, events took a dramatic and tragic turn moments later.
Police say Mary returned carrying a sufuria filled with boiling water and allegedly poured the scalding liquid onto her husband. At the time, Danston was holding the 16-month-old child against his chest, causing both of them to suffer serious burn injuries.
The victims were immediately rushed for medical treatment and later referred to Kakamega General Hospital. Medical sources indicate that the child remains admitted in serious condition as doctors continue to monitor the extent of the injuries.
The incident has shocked residents of Shivagala village, many of whom described it as one of the most disturbing domestic disputes witnessed in the area in recent years.
Authorities confirmed that following the attack, Mary Mmbone Khalechi fled the scene and disappeared to an unknown location. Police officers have since launched a manhunt to trace and arrest her.
Investigators are now piecing together the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether the introduction of the second wife was planned in advance and what may have triggered the violent response.
The case has reignited public debate about family conflicts, polygamous relationships, and the emotional challenges that can arise when major family decisions are disclosed unexpectedly.
Police have urged anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the suspect to report to the nearest police station as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, family members and residents are hoping for the recovery of the injured child, whose condition remains a major concern following the shocking attack.
