Nairobi, June 13, 2024 – President William Ruto is set to depart this evening for a significant diplomatic engagement, attending both the 50th G7 Summit in Apulia, Italy, and the inaugural Summit on Peace in Ukraine, scheduled in Bürgenstock, Switzerland.
President Ruto’s participation underscores Kenya’s growing influence and commitment to global governance and peacebuilding. At the G7 Summit, taking place tomorrow in Apulia, he will advocate for the inclusion of African countries in global decision-making processes. His address will focus on tackling global challenges, such as climate change and international conflicts, by harnessing Africa’s potential in green industrialization, digital transformation, and innovation. A key part of his speech will be the call for reforms to create a fairer international financial system that better serves developing nations.
In his capacity as the African Union (AU) Champion for Institutional Reform, President Ruto is expected to highlight ongoing AU initiatives aimed at enhancing trade, development, peace, and stability across the continent. These reforms are pivotal for greater global participation and representation of African nations in multilateral institutions.
The President’s itinerary continues on Sunday in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, where he will join other global leaders at the Summit on Peace in Ukraine. This summit seeks to chart a collective path towards resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. President Ruto will address the summit on the broader impacts of the conflict, drawing parallels with conflicts in Africa. He will offer insights based on Kenya’s rich experience in mediation and peacebuilding efforts within the continent.
In addition to his keynote addresses, President Ruto will advocate for a reformed, more democratic, and effective United Nations system. He will argue that such reforms are essential for addressing global peace and security challenges more efficiently. His push for a more representative UN underscores Kenya’s stance on the need for equitable global governance structures.
Furthermore, President Ruto will engage in several bilateral talks with other Heads of State and Government on the sidelines of both summits. These discussions aim to strengthen diplomatic ties and explore collaborative efforts on various issues of mutual interest.
Hussein Mohamed, the State House Spokesperson, emphasized that these summits are crucial platforms for President Ruto to assert Africa’s role in global affairs. His participation is expected to bring African perspectives to the forefront of international discussions, particularly on issues of financial equity, sustainable development, and global peace.
This series of high-level engagements marks a significant step in Kenya’s foreign policy under President Ruto’s leadership, aiming to enhance the country’s diplomatic footprint and influence on the global stage.
