A dramatic police operation in Nandi County has led to the arrest of a suspect ferrying a large quantity of cannabis, highlighting the ongoing war against drug trafficking in Kenya.

On Wednesday, 20th August 2025, officers from the National Police Service (NPS) stationed at Kaptel Police Station acted on timely intelligence shared by members of the public. The tip-off indicated that a vehicle suspected of transporting bhang from Kapsisywo trading centre towards Kaptel was on the move.

Swift Police Action

According to reports, the officers swiftly mounted a response and intercepted a suspect who had alighted from the vehicle. Upon conducting a search, the police discovered a bag containing 22 stones of Cannabis Sativa, each carefully wrapped in polythene bags. Shockingly, each of the larger stones contained 30 smaller stones, indicating a highly organized packaging method aimed at facilitating distribution.

The suspect was immediately placed under arrest and escorted, together with the recovered exhibits, to Kaptel Police Station. Authorities confirmed that he is set to face charges in court related to possession and trafficking of narcotic substances.

NPS Commends Public Cooperation

In a statement following the operation, the National Police Service commended members of the public for their vigilance and collaboration in the fight against drug trafficking.

“We appreciate the cooperation of the public and the timely sharing of intelligence, which was key in this successful operation,” the statement read.

The police further emphasized the importance of community-police partnerships in dismantling networks involved in the illegal drug trade.

Cannabis in Kenya: A Growing Challenge

Cannabis, commonly known as bhang, remains one of the most abused illicit drugs in Kenya despite being outlawed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control Act. Over the years, authorities have intensified crackdowns in various counties, particularly in western and Rift Valley regions, where trafficking routes are believed to be most active.

Nandi County, owing to its proximity to border points and busy trading centres, has increasingly become a hotspot for drug trafficking activities. Security experts argue that traffickers often exploit rural transport routes to evade major security roadblocks along highways.

The Bigger Picture: Kenya’s Anti-Drug War

This latest arrest adds to a growing list of successful operations targeting drug cartels across the country. Just last month, police in neighboring Uasin Gishu County intercepted another suspect ferrying a large haul of cannabis hidden in a maize consignment.

The government has consistently warned against involvement in drug-related activities, stressing the devastating effects narcotics have on the youth. According to the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), drug abuse is a key contributor to rising crime, school dropouts, and mental health issues among young people.

What Next for the Suspect?

Legal experts note that under the law, possession of cannabis in such quantities carries severe penalties, including hefty fines and long prison sentences. The arraignment of the Chesumei suspect is expected to send a strong warning to others engaged in the illicit trade.

Meanwhile, the police have pledged to remain vigilant, assuring the public that intelligence-driven operations will continue.

Community Role in Crime Prevention

The Chesumei case underscores the crucial role of public cooperation in the success of security operations. Authorities are urging residents across Nandi and other counties to continue reporting suspicious activities through available hotlines, assuring them that their identities will be protected.

As the war on drugs intensifies, the National Police Service insists that Kenya’s security apparatus will not relent until narcotic networks are dismantled.
