In a dramatic pre-dawn operation in Siaya County, police officers from Yala Police Station successfully recovered three suspected stolen cows after intercepting a suspicious vehicle along the Butere–Ulumbi road. The incident, which unfolded in the early hours, has sparked renewed praise for the National Police Service following the swift action taken by its officers.
According to authorities, the officers were on routine mobile patrol when they spotted a Toyota Caldina, registration number KBK 404G, exhibiting suspicious movements. When flagged down, the driver defied police orders and sped off, prompting a chase through the quiet stretches of Ulumbi Village.
The pursuit came to an abrupt end when the vehicle veered off the road and stopped. Before officers could make an arrest, the four occupants abandoned the car and fled on foot under the cover of darkness. Despite their escape, police immediately secured the vehicle and conducted a search that revealed three cows crammed inside, believed to be stolen during the night.
Officers also recovered a kitchen knife and a mobile phone, believed to have been used or left behind by the suspects. The vehicle has since been impounded at Yala Police Station awaiting further forensic and legal processing, while the recovered items have been documented as exhibits.
Police say a multi-agency team is now actively pursuing crucial leads to track down the suspects. Investigators are confident that the mobile phone retrieved from the vehicle will play a significant role in identifying the culprits behind what appears to be a coordinated livestock theft syndicate operating in the region.
In a statement, the National Police Service(NPS) commended the officers involved for their vigilance, professionalism, and commitment to safeguarding local communities from rising cases of livestock theft.
Livestock theft remains a pressing concern in several rural parts of Kenya, where cattle hold significant economic and cultural value. This successful recovery operation is expected to boost public confidence and discourage similar criminal activities.
Residents are encouraged to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement as investigations continue.
