At least two people have been confirmed dead on 15th December night, while several others sustained injuries, following a devastating nighttime fire that destroyed houses in the Mashimoni area of Laini Saba, Kibra Constituency, Nairobi.
The blaze reportedly started late on Monday night in a single house before quickly spreading to nearby residential buildings, leaving hundreds of households without shelter.
According to witnesses, many residents were asleep when the fire erupted, and attempts by locals to put it out failed due to the rapid spread and extreme intensity of the flames.
Kibra MP Peter Orero confirmed that two bodies were retrieved from the scene, explaining that the victims were badly burned and are yet to be identified.
He further stated that emergency and disaster response teams were dispatched and succeeded in largely bringing the fire under control by Tuesday morning.
Orero expressed his sympathies to the affected families as authorities continue investigations to establish the cause of the fire.
The tragedy comes just days after a separate fire incident displaced dozens of families in Mathare, Nairobi.
