Trans Nzoia Erupts as Mob Disrupts EACC Raid on Governor Natembeya’s Home Amid KSh 1.4B Scandal
In a dramatic turn of events in Trans Nzoia County, a violent mob attacked Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officers on Monday, May 19, 2025, during a high-stakes corruption investigation targeting Governor George Natembeya. The raid, authorized by valid search warrants, aimed to uncover the truth behind alleged irregular procurement and fictitious payments totaling a staggering KSh 1.4 billion.
According to an official statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the EACC officers were executing their mandate when their operation was abruptly and violently interrupted. The planned searches were carried out at the governor’s residence and office, as well as properties linked to four other individuals suspected of involvement in the county graft scandal.
The corruption under investigation allegedly occurred during the financial years 2022/2023 and 2024/2025, raising serious concerns over the management of public funds in the county government under Governor Natembeya’s administration.
The situation spiraled out of control when a group of hostile individuals forcefully gained access to the governor’s residence, where EACC officials were lawfully conducting their search in the presence of the governor’s family, the county attorney, and legal representatives.
According to the DCI, the violent group overpowered the security officers assigned to guard the scene and went on a rampage. In a calculated act of aggression, the attackers maliciously damaged five EACC vehicles and made away with crucial items that had already been seized by investigators. Other personal and official valuables from the vehicles were also reported stolen.
This brazen assault on anti-corruption officials marks a worrying escalation in resistance to accountability and the enforcement of the law. Authorities have strongly condemned the incident, terming it an outright obstruction of justice and a deliberate attempt to undermine the rule of law.
“This attack is a blatant attempt to undermine the rule of law and obstruct justice,” the DCI said in their statement.
The Directorate has already launched a full-scale investigation to identify those responsible for the attack and to ensure they face the full force of the law. Preliminary findings suggest the ambush may have been organized to destroy or recover incriminating evidence against top county officials.
Security experts have warned that such attacks not only endanger the lives of public officers but also weaken the institutions designed to combat corruption. Transparency advocates are calling for swift and decisive action to deter future occurrences.
The EACC has remained tight-lipped about the specific items stolen during the incident, but sources close to the investigation suggest the evidence may have been critical to the progress of the multi-billion-shilling graft probe.
Governor Natembeya, who has not been formally charged, has not released a public statement regarding the raid or the attack that followed. However, legal experts note that the presence of his legal team during the raid indicates that the process was being conducted within the confines of the law.
This latest development has sparked nationwide debate over the safety and operational freedom of anti-corruption agencies. Civil society organizations are now urging the Inspector General of Police and the National Police Service to increase security for EACC officials, especially when executing high-risk operations.
