The Nairobi Gov’Johnson Sakaja has released a statement following the changes at Mama Lucy Hospital.
In a statement via twitter, Sakaja says he has spoken to the lady (name withheld for patient privacy) who lost her baby at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital and her family and offered his heartfelt condolences and support.
He noted that there is an improvement at the facility
“In as much as there have been several notable improvements at Mama Lucy, a lot remains to be done. I will not tire in working for the benefit of your health and will not let anyone come in the way of that.” He said.
He reiterated that he has consequently made changes to the entire leadership of the hospital even as they continue to work on improvements.
“Nairobians deserve dignity and care. It will work.” He said.
The letter from Nairobi County Executive Committee and signed by Dr. Anastasia Nyalita reads:
The case of a twenty six (26) year old patient who resides in Njiru and lost her unborn baby at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital is disheartening and unfortunate.
The lady arrived at the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital on Saturday, 15th April at 5.20pm in the company of her relatives.
The expectant mother complained of lower abdominal pains radiating to the back with increased intensity. The patient also complained that she could not feel regular baby movements. The Doctor on call immediately recommended an ultra sound to validate the lack of foetal heartbeat.
The medical team and counsellors at the Mama Lucy Kibaki informed the patient and her relatives of the ultrasound results which revealed that the baby was already dead.
The Ultra sound scan results came back revealing that the patient had experienced an Intra-Uterine Foetal Death (UFD) at 38wks 5days.
At 7:20pm the patient who was already in labor delivered a macerated (shows skin and soft tissue changes- skin discoloration/ darkening, redness, peeling and breakdown) still birth male infant with a birth weight of 2,600grams.
The medical team showed the patient the baby and informed her that the baby had passed away 2-3 days before delivery and her visit to the hospital.
Despite all this, and the patient and baby’s prior condition notwith standing, we feel that she could have been handled better. H.E. The Governor’s promise includes treating our citizens with utmost dignity and care.
The Governor has personally spoken to the patient and her family, offered his condolences and commiserated with them.

While there have been improvements in the handling of patients and the level of customer service at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, a lot remains to be done and has been lined up by the County Government.
This includes, completion of stalled building projects, improving the staffing levels, handover of Mama Margaret Uhuru Hospital (which will ease the pressure on MLKH) among other interventions.
Already, the new ICU and Renal facilities are up and running and offering much needed services to our people.
Consequently, the following changes have been made at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital,
