Visual activist cartoonist Gideon Kibet, popularly known as ‘Kibet Bull,’ has confirmed his release after being abducted by suspected state agents weeks ago. His brother, Rony Kiplagat, who also went missing in December, has similarly been freed.

In his first social media post since December 2024, Kibet revealed that he was dropped off in Luanda Town, Vihiga County, between 3 AM and 4 AM on Monday. His release coincided with the resurfacing of four other missing young men, including his brother Rony.

The cartoonist also revealed that his phone was confiscated during his captivity, leaving him cut off from communication with the outside world.

Rony Kiplagat Also Found Safe

Rony Kiplagat, who disappeared outside a church on December 21, 2024, was also confirmed safe. The family had earlier expressed growing concerns about his whereabouts and that of Kibet Bull, as both cases sparked public outrage and calls for accountability from authorities.

Pattern of Abductions Raises Alarm

Kenya has witnessed a disturbing rise in forced disappearances targeting vocal critics, activists, and dissenting voices. Human rights organizations have repeatedly called for transparency and justice in addressing these abductions, which have become more frequent and brazen.

Kibet’s release offers a glimmer of relief for his supporters and the artistic community, who had been vocal in demanding his safe return. However, the ordeal underscores the persistent threats faced by activists and whistleblowers in Kenya.

As investigations continue into these disappearances, questions remain unanswered about the identities of the perpetrators and the motivations behind the abductions.
