Eldoret, Kenya – Hon. Ababu Namwamba, Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is mourning the loss of his longtime security aide and close friend, Corporal Jonah Kemboy Rotich, after an 18-year working relationship.

Rotich, who had been battling multiple health challenges, passed away recently, leaving Namwamba and his family heartbroken. The diplomat described Rotich as more than just a security aide—he was a brother, confidant, and an integral part of his family.

A Bond Beyond Duty: 18 Years of Trust and Brotherhood

In an emotional tribute posted on X (formerly Twitter), Namwamba reflected on the deep bond they shared, saying:

“For eighteen years, Corporal Jonah Kemboy Rotich has been more than just a trusted security aide to me. He has been a cherished brother and a true friend. FAMILY in every sense. Professional yet humane, humble yet firm, loyal and honest beyond a morsel of doubt, he has been an ever-present figure around me in all situations.”

The two had travelled the world together, shared dreams, raised their children side by side, and built what Namwamba described as “one large family.” Despite their different religious backgrounds—Namwamba being a devout Catholic and Rotich a dedicated Seventh-Day Adventist—their faith in God united them.

A Symbol of Unity in a Divided Society

Namwamba highlighted Rotich’s role in transcending ethnic divisions, emphasizing how their relationship stood as a testament to Kenya’s potential for unity beyond tribal lines.

“My family and I have felt safe with Rotich. And that counts for a lot in a society that is obsessed with elevating parochial tribal sectionalism above the purity of human connection. Indeed, Rotich has felt as much at home among the Mulembe Nation of Ingo/Western as I have felt among his Kitwek backyard of Cherangany and Eldoret.”

He praised Rotich as “a living testimony of how to forge a unified nation beyond myopic profiling and puerile ethnic jingoism.”

A Courageous Battle and Final Farewell

Rotich’s passing followed a prolonged battle with multiple health issues, which he faced with “admirable courage and stoicism.” Namwamba expressed deep sorrow over the loss, committing Rotich’s soul to God and praying for comfort for his grieving family.

“We are devastated by this painful loss and commit his soul to the Good Lord as we pray that his family finds comfort in the bosom of Christ.”

Rotich will be laid to rest on June 3, 2025, in his Eldoret home, with Namwamba and his family expected to attend the funeral.

Namwamba’s tribute concluded with a heartfelt prayer:

“Eternal rest grant unto brother Jonah Kemboy Rotich, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. AMEN.”

Final Thoughts: A Lesson in Loyalty and Humanity

The passing of Jonah Kemboy Rotich is not just a personal loss for Ababu Namwamba but also a reminder of the profound bonds that can form beyond professional duty. In a world where relationships are often transactional, Rotich’s story stands out as one of genuine friendship, loyalty, and unity.
