A retired physics and mathematics teacher has been living on the streets of Nairobi for over a decade after his wife allegedly conspired to have him declared mentally unfit—just to gain control of his KSh 3.5 million pension and monthly income.

The heartbreaking story of Mwalimu JJ, as he is known, has sparked outrage after a well-wisher shared his plight on social media. According to the post, the former educator was forced into homelessness in 2013 after his wife allegedly manipulated legal and medical systems to strip him of his finances and property.

A Promising Career Cut Short

Mwalimu JJ once stood at the front of classrooms, shaping young minds in physics and mathematics. After years of dedicated service, he retired with what should have been a comfortable financial cushion—a lump sum payment of KSh 3.5 million and a monthly pension of KSh 33,000.

But instead of enjoying his retirement, he found himself battling for survival on Nairobi’s harsh streets.

The Alleged Betrayal

According to the account shared by activist Amoh Charming Mwangi on Facebook, Mwalimu JJ’s troubles began shortly after receiving his retirement benefits. His wife reportedly orchestrated a scheme to have him declared mentally unstable, allowing her to take control of his bank accounts and property under the guise of “managing his affairs.”

Once she gained access, she allegedly transferred all assets into her name and evicted him from their marital home. Since then, the former teacher has been homeless, relying on the kindness of strangers while fighting to reclaim what was taken from him.

A Glimmer of Hope

A good Samaritan, Kamau Watoria, took up Mwalimu JJ’s case and helped bring it to court. A hearing scheduled for October 25th could finally bring justice—and possibly restore his stolen pension and property.

Legal experts say cases like this highlight vulnerabilities in Kenya’s guardianship and pension systems, where family members can exploit legal loopholes to seize assets from elderly or vulnerable individuals.

A Wider Problem

Mwalimu JJ’s story is not isolated. Across Kenya, there have been increasing reports of retirees being swindled out of their pensions by relatives or spouses.

  • 2019: A retired civil servant in Nakuru lost his home after his son fraudulently transferred the title deed.
  • 2021: An 80-year-old widow in Mombasa was evicted by her stepchildren after her husband’s death.

Advocates for the elderly argue that stronger legal protections are needed to prevent such exploitation.

What’s Next?

As the court date approaches, many hope Mwalimu JJ will finally get justice. Social media users have expressed anger over his ordeal, with some calling for stricter laws to protect retirees from financial abuse.
