William Saliba could be back sooner than expected as Arsenal receive major injury boost

Arsenal have received encouraging news over William Saliba after the French defender was ruled out with a back injury sustained during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. While the centre-back is still expected to miss the beginning of the 2026/27 Premier League campaign, the latest reports suggest his absence may not be as lengthy as initially feared.

According to Football London, citing the BBC, Saliba is expected to be sidelined for a minimum of two to three months. That timeframe could put the Arsenal defender in contention to return around October, with the Gunners scheduled to face Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium on October 10.

The update represents a significant improvement on some of the earlier fears surrounding Saliba’s condition. There had been concerns that the 25-year-old could require surgery and potentially remain unavailable for several months. However, Arsenal confirmed in July that specialist assessments had concluded surgery was not recommended.

The club said Saliba had suffered a back injury that would require a period of rehabilitation and that he would undergo a managed recovery programme.

How Saliba suffered the injury

Saliba had reportedly been managing the back problem during France’s World Cup campaign before the issue became more serious during the semi-final against Spain.

The Arsenal defender was forced off after approximately 30 minutes of France’s 2-0 defeat to Spain. He subsequently missed France’s third-place playoff against England.

The injury was particularly concerning because Saliba had been an important member of Arsenal’s defence during their successful 2025/26 campaign. The Frenchman made 50 appearances in all competitions as Arsenal won the Premier League title and reached the Champions League final.

When could Saliba return?

A two-to-three-month recovery period would make October a realistic target, although Arsenal are unlikely to take unnecessary risks with such an important player.

The October 10 meeting with Leeds United is therefore emerging as a possible comeback date rather than a guaranteed return date. Saliba would first need to complete his rehabilitation, return to full training and prove that he can handle the physical demands of competitive football.

Football London reports that the defender could be out until at least mid-October, depending on how his rehabilitation progresses.

That means Arsenal supporters may have to wait through a substantial portion of the opening weeks of the Premier League season before seeing their defensive star again.

Major challenge for Mikel Arteta

Saliba’s absence is a significant concern for Mikel Arteta because of the defender’s importance to Arsenal’s defensive structure. His pace, strength, recovery ability and composure in possession have made him one of the key components of the Gunners’ back line.

Arsenal have already been managing other defensive fitness concerns, with Jurrien Timber also recovering from injury. Reuters reported on August 15 that Timber was progressing but still required several weeks before returning to full training, while Saliba remained sidelined with his back problem.

The timing could therefore be crucial. Arsenal are scheduled to begin their Premier League title defence against Coventry City on August 21, meaning Arteta will have to find a reliable defensive combination while Saliba completes his recovery.

Arsenal fans can remain hopeful

The biggest positive from the latest Saliba update is that surgery has been avoided. A surgical procedure could have resulted in an even longer absence, making a return towards October far less likely.

For now, Arsenal’s priority will be ensuring Saliba makes a full recovery rather than rushing him back. The defender’s potential return against Leeds on October 10 would be a huge boost, but the club will ultimately want him fully fit for the demanding months ahead.

For Arsenal supporters, the message is clear: Saliba is still facing a significant spell on the sidelines, but the latest two-to-three-month timeline provides genuine hope that he could return before the injury becomes a season-defining setback.
