William Saliba has been enjoying some well-earned time away from football, and the Arsenal defender has given supporters another glimpse of his holiday after linking up with Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o.

Saliba was recently pictured enjoying his vacation with family and friends before meeting the former Barcelona, Inter Milan and Cameroon striker. The reunion has attracted attention from Arsenal supporters, particularly because of Saliba’s connection to Cameroon through his family background.

The meeting with Eto’o adds another memorable moment to Saliba’s summer break. Eto’o is one of the most decorated African footballers of all time, having won major honours with Barcelona and Inter Milan and enjoyed a remarkable international career with Cameroon.

For Saliba, however, the holiday comes at an important moment in his career. The 25-year-old centre-back is currently recovering from a back injury suffered while representing France at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Arsenal confirmed in July that Saliba would be sidelined for an extended period after the injury, although he would not require surgery. The defender had been struggling with the problem during the World Cup and was forced off after just 30 minutes during France’s semi-final defeat to Spain. He subsequently missed France’s third-place playoff against England.

The timing of Saliba’s vacation therefore gives the Arsenal defender an opportunity to rest and concentrate on his rehabilitation before returning to competitive action.

His absence is particularly significant for Mikel Arteta. Saliba has established himself as one of Arsenal’s most important players and has become a key component of the club’s defensive structure.

Arsenal have already been forced to consider defensive reinforcements because of injury problems involving Saliba and Jurriën Timber. The club have reportedly opened discussions with Bayer Leverkusen over England international Jarell Quansah, while Ezri Konsa has also been considered.

Despite the current injury setback, Saliba’s long-term future at Arsenal is secure. The French international signed a new long-term contract with the Gunners in September 2025, reportedly committing his future to the club until 2030. Arsenal described him as one of the best defenders in world football when announcing the agreement.

That commitment underlines how highly Arsenal value the defender. Since becoming a regular first-team player, Saliba has developed into a composed, physically dominant and technically assured centre-back capable of playing at the highest level.

His meeting with Eto’o also carries an interesting cultural dimension. Although Saliba represents France internationally, his family roots give him a connection to Cameroon, making a meeting with one of the country’s greatest football icons particularly noteworthy.

For Arsenal fans, the biggest concern remains Saliba’s recovery. Arsenal are preparing to begin their Premier League title defence against Coventry City on August 21, but the defender is expected to miss the start of the campaign because of his back problem.

While supporters wait for his return, the latest holiday images show Saliba relaxed and enjoying time away from the pressures of elite football.

The encounter with Eto’o is likely to generate plenty of discussion among Arsenal and African football fans, with the images offering a rare glimpse into Saliba’s life away from the pitch.

For now, the priority is clear: recovery, rehabilitation and a successful return to Arsenal’s defence.
