Fake alcohol drinks worth over Sh5.9M, suspect manhunt launched – Makongeni

A consignment of alcoholic drinks bearing fake KRA stamps has been recovered at Makongeni estate, Thika Sub-county next to BAT factory, in a go down belonging to SUNRISE Limited; Director of Criminal Investigation DCI reports.

In a raid conducted by detectives from the Economic Crimes unit assisted by KRA officials, 2 drums of ethanol, 40 Cartons of Euro Brandy Gin, 90 Cartons of Sambuka vodka, 6 Cartons of starLight Vodka, 160 Cartons of Budget Vodka and 49 Cartons of Queens vodka all affixed with KRA Counterfeit stamps were recovered.

it was also gathered that police impounded an illegal bottling machine, half a roll of countefeit KRA stamps and 36000 pieces of the same. Assorted empty bottles, cartons, caps and drums were also recovered.

The value of the goods seized, according to DCI, was estimated at Sh5.94M and total tax lost Sh2.38M. The products were seized and a notice of offence serial number 7700 issued. The bottling plant was also dismantled.

Efforts to arrest the owner of the unlicensed business who is believed to be one Joseph Kanja, are at advanced stages.
