President William Samoe Ruto has launched the Nairobi County school feeding program today, fulfilling a key campaign pledge of collaborating with counties to feed public primary school children countrywide.
While at Roysambu Primary School today, the 20th of June, while in the company of Governor the Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, the President served lunch to pupils, just as he did at Mukarara Primary School in May 2022, where he promised free lunch for all public primary schools upon his election.
The national government will provide matching funds to counties that have a school feeding program plan, contributing an equal amount.
An additional budget of Kshs 5 billion has been allocated to enhance the national school feeding program.
The Nairobi county school feeding program specifically targets 250,000 children in public primary schools and ECDs.
The collaboration between the national government and counties aims to provide meals for 8 million children nationwide.
The program serves as a safety net, fostering equity and access to education while significantly boosting school attendance rates, particularly for vulnerable children from food-insecure households.
