A building under construction collapsed opposite Karen Community Church along Ngong Road, triggering panic and renewed concerns over safety and urban planning in Nairobi. The incident, which occurred earlier today, left six people injured, all of whom have been rushed to hospital for urgent medical attention.

Emergency responders moved swiftly to the scene, launching search, rescue, and debris-clearing operations. Authorities have since confirmed that all trapped persons have been accounted for, easing fears of further casualties. Rescue teams remain on-site to secure the area, clear rubble, and investigate the structural failure to prevent additional risks to nearby buildings and road users.

The collapse has reignited public anger over poor construction standards and alleged failures within Nairobi’s planning and approval systems. The site, located in a busy and high-profile area near Karen and Kileleshwa, has raised serious questions about how such projects receive clearance despite apparent safety risks.

Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai took to X (formerly Twitter) to strongly condemn what he termed as systemic failure within the county government. In a scathing post, Alai stated that Nairobi’s planning department is “destroying the city,” warning that more lives could be lost if accountability is not enforced. He directly named senior officials within the planning department, calling for them to be held fully responsible for the collapse and similar incidents across the city.

“This is another mess from Nairobi’s planning. People will die in this city as we watch,” Alai wrote, reflecting the growing frustration among residents and leaders over repeated building failures.

In recent years, Nairobi has witnessed multiple cases of collapsed or condemned buildings, many linked to poor workmanship, substandard materials, and corruption in approvals. Urban planning experts warn that unless strict inspections and enforcement measures are implemented, such tragedies will continue.
