In a bold move to overhaul U.S. immigration policies, President-elect Donald Trump has announced plans to terminate birthright citizenship for children born to undocumented immigrants. This proposed change would deny automatic U.S. citizenship to individuals born on American soil unless at least one parent is a legal resident or U.S. citizen.
Trump criticized the current policy as a “historical myth and misinterpretation of the law” and blamed the Biden administration for creating a magnet that encourages illegal immigration. Speaking to reporters, Trump expressed concerns about the strain on government resources and benefits provided to individuals born under the current policy.
“The United States is one of the few countries in the world that grants automatic citizenship to children born to non-citizen parents who are unlawfully present in the country. This must end,” Trump stated.
Ending Birth Tourism and Illegal Immigration
Trump further revealed plans to issue an executive order immediately upon taking office, clarifying that future children of undocumented immigrants will no longer qualify for U.S. citizenship. He also pledged to crack down on “birth tourism,” where foreign nationals travel to the U.S. to secure citizenship for their children.
“At least one parent must be a citizen or legal resident to qualify,” Trump emphasized.
Immigration Policies to Restore Sovereignty
The President-elect promised to secure U.S. borders and restore sovereignty, starting from day one of his administration. “We will secure our borders, end welfare for illegal immigrants, and prioritize American citizens. Our country will be great again,” he declared.
This announcement marks a significant shift in U.S. immigration policy, sparking debates about its legal and social implications. As Trump prepares to take office, the proposed executive order has already drawn attention from both supporters and critics of stricter immigration laws.
