The Ministry of Health has suspended 40 hospitals and health facilities across the country from participating in the Social Health Insurance Authority (SHIA) programme, according to a notice published in the Kenya Gazette on Thursday, 7th August 2025.

“The Cabinet Secretary for Health Hon Aden Duale has announced the immediate suspension of 40 hospitals from taking part in the Social Health Authority (SHA), citing cases of fraud and abuse of the system.” A statement from Sha X read.

The announcement, issued under section 48(6) of the Social Health Insurance Act (No. 16 of 2023), means the affected facilities will not be entitled to receive payments from the SHIA for services offered to patients during the suspension period.

“The affected facilities were officially gazetted on August 7, 2025, and will be barred from offering services under the SHA until investigations are concluded and appropriate sanctions are enforced.” The statement on X read in part.

Although the official gazette notice did not specify the reasons for each suspension, such measures are typically taken following non-compliance with licensing requirements, failure to meet minimum quality standards, or breaches of operational guidelines set by the Ministry of Health and the Social Health Insurance Authority.

The suspension impacts facilities in at least 12 counties, including Nairobi, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Mandera, Bungoma, Kajiado, Wajir, and Vihiga. Among the notable institutions listed are Rachuonyo County Hospital in Homa Bay, Lemayian Hospital in Kitengela, Bristol Park Hospital in Nairobi’s Fedha estate, and Oasis Doctors Plaza in Kakamega.

This move is expected to disrupt healthcare access for thousands of patients who rely on SHIA benefits to cover their medical expenses. Residents in rural areas, where alternative accredited facilities may be scarce, could face longer travel distances or higher out-of-pocket costs.

Healthcare experts are urging affected counties to act swiftly in ensuring that suspended facilities address the compliance issues, enabling their reinstatement to the national scheme.

The Social Health Insurance Authority, introduced under the 2023 Act, was designed to replace the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) with a more comprehensive and accountable system. Its aim is to provide universal health coverage by pooling resources and paying accredited hospitals for services rendered to insured patients.
