In a major security breakthrough, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have recovered two AK-47 rifles believed to have been used in the brutal killing of three National Police Reservists (NPR) in Igembe North, Meru County.

The successful recovery took place earlier today, 26th April 2025, during a joint operation led by the DCI Crime Scene Investigations (CSI) unit, supported by officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) Kipsing camp. The mission was carried out in Lemorijo village, Lengurma Location, within Isiolo North Sub-County.

The two AK-47 rifles, each fitted with empty magazines, were found abandoned during a meticulous search of the area. According to preliminary investigations, these weapons are directly linked to the fatal ambush that occurred on 7th April 2025, which left three NPR officers dead after an attack by armed raiders.

How the Attack Unfolded

On the fateful day, the three NPR officers were reportedly ambushed while on patrol duty near the Meru-Isiolo border. The attackers, armed with high-powered rifles, opened fire, fatally wounding the reservists before fleeing the scene. The brazen attack sparked immediate outrage and calls for enhanced security measures in the volatile region.

Following the incident, the DCI, GSU, and local law enforcement launched an extensive manhunt for the perpetrators. The recent recovery of the two AK-47s marks the first major breakthrough in the ongoing investigations.

Joint Efforts That Made the Recovery Possible

Authorities have credited the success of today’s operation to coordinated efforts involving elite DCI teams, GSU officers, local administration, and members of the public. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Igembe North has since taken over the investigations.

Speaking after the recovery, a senior DCI officer praised the collaboration between the security teams and local residents, noting that such partnerships are crucial in combating criminal activities.

“We commend all officers and residents involved in today’s operation. Their dedication and courage have contributed immensely to upholding law and order in the region,” the officer stated.

Investigations Still Ongoing

The DCI has confirmed that investigations into the attack are still ongoing. Forensic experts from the Crime Scene Investigations (CSI) unit are currently examining the recovered rifles to obtain ballistic evidence that could lead to the identification and arrest of the attackers.

Sources within the DCI have revealed that more suspects are being pursued, and additional operations are scheduled to be conducted in surrounding villages over the coming days.

Residents have been urged to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing any information that could assist in bringing the culprits to justice.

Security Measures Stepped Up

In light of the recent events, security has been intensified across Meru and Isiolo counties. Patrols have been increased, and a special unit has been deployed to monitor border areas where cattle rustling and armed raids have been rampant.

Local leaders have lauded the efforts by security agencies but also called for more sustainable solutions to curb insecurity, especially in regions prone to inter-community conflicts.

“We need long-term investments in community policing, better intelligence gathering, and more resources for our security forces to maintain peace,” said one area chief.

Public Reactions

The recovery of the two AK-47 rifles has sparked mixed reactions among residents. While many have expressed relief that progress is being made, others remain fearful that armed groups might regroup and launch retaliatory attacks.

Security experts have emphasized the need for continuous intelligence-led operations and strong community engagement to maintain peace in volatile regions.
