Police Nab Three Suspects in Violent Robbery

A man in Mawego, Homa Bay County, narrowly escaped death after being ambushed by a gang of armed robbers early this morning. The victim, whose identity has been withheld for safety reasons, was attacked while walking home at around 4:50 AM.

According to police reports, the assailants—riding on two motorbikes—were armed with crude weapons, including clubs. The victim sustained a severe head injury during the assault but managed to raise an alarm, prompting a swift response from officers based at Kendu Bay Police Station.

Swift Police Action Leads to Arrests

Authorities arrived at the scene quickly and apprehended three suspects, who were later positively identified by the victim. The suspects are currently being held at Kendu Bay Police Station as investigations continue.

Two motorcycles—a red Bajaj Boxer (registration number KMGP 955T) and an unregistered bike of the same make—were recovered from the attackers. Police also seized a blood-stained club, which is believed to have been used in the assault.

Rising Concerns Over Motorbike-Related Crimes

This incident highlights growing concerns over the use of motorcycles in violent crimes across Kenya. In recent months, police have reported an uptick in robberies involving boda boda riders, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.

Local residents in Mawego expressed relief at the arrests but called for increased police patrols.

“These criminals strike when it’s dark, and they disappear quickly. We need more officers on the roads at night,” said one resident who spoke to the BBC on condition of anonymity.

Police Reassure Public of Enhanced Security

In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) reaffirmed its commitment to tackling crime and ensuring public safety.

“We remain dedicated to providing effective, people-centric, and accountable policing services for a safe and prosperous society,” the statement read.

Authorities have urged anyone with additional information on criminal activities to report to the nearest police station or use the toll-free emergency number 999.
