Several students from St Michael Liavo Secondary School were left nursing injuries after the school bus they were travelling in was involved in a grisly road accident on its way from St Cecilia Chepareria in West Pokot County.
A total of 48 students from St. Michael Liyavo Secondary School in Kwanza narrowly escaped tragedy after the school bus they were travelling in was involved in a road accident at Karas area along the Kapenguria–Lodwar Highway in West Pokot County.
The students, accompanied by their teachers and school staff, were returning from an Education Day celebration hosted by the Catholic Diocese of Kitale at St. Cecilia-Chepareria when their bus, borrowed from Bishop Alexander Muge Secondary School, encountered two trailers obstructing the road.
While several individuals sustained injuries and were taken to Kapenguria County Referral Hospital, all occupants of the bus, including the school principal and driver, were reported safe. Bishop Henry Juma Odonya visited the accident site and hospital to offer support.
According to eyewitnesses at the scene, the bus veered off the road and landed on its side after the driver lost control while negotiating a bend. The impact left the vehicle visibly damaged, with shattered windows, a dislodged rear wheel, and extensive body dents.
Medical personnel at the facility confirmed that most of the injured students were in stable condition and receiving appropriate care. A few others were treated for minor injuries and discharged later the same day.
Local authorities have launched investigations into the incident to determine the exact cause of the accident. Preliminary reports suggest that the condition of the road, combined with rainy weather and poor visibility, may have played a significant role.
The management of Bishop Alexander Muge Girls’ Secondary School expressed gratitude to the well-wishers who responded promptly, helping save lives.
“We are deeply thankful to all who came to our students’ aid. Their actions embody the spirit of community and compassion,” said a school spokesperson.
This latest accident comes amid growing concerns over the safety of school transportation in Kenya, especially during inter-school events and long-distance travel.
Parents and education stakeholders have renewed calls for stricter enforcement of safety measures, regular inspection of school vehicles, and mandatory road safety training for school bus drivers.
