A major blow has been dealt to drug trafficking networks in Nakuru after Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) detectives seized heroin worth Sh1.19 million and arrested a suspected trafficker in a swift, intelligence-led operation.

The dramatic arrest unfolded when detectives intercepted 42-year-old Ephantus Kariuki Mwangi, who was riding a motorcycle while ferrying luggage that immediately raised suspicion among the vigilant officers. According to investigators, the suspect was operating what they believe to be an active drug supply run within Nakuru and its surrounding areas.

ANU detectives, acting on actionable intelligence, tracked Kariuki before moving in to stop him. He was riding a motorcycle registration number KMEC 785W when officers flagged him down for inspection. Upon searching the luggage he was carrying, detectives uncovered 397 grams of heroin, expertly concealed to evade detection.

Authorities estimate the street value of the seized heroin at Sh1.19 million, underscoring the scale and seriousness of the trafficking operation. The packaging method suggested the drugs were prepared for distribution rather than personal use, strengthening the case against the suspect.

“The arrest effectively cut short an ongoing supply chain,” a source close to the investigation revealed, noting that the drugs were likely destined for local markets within Nakuru or nearby counties.

More Drugs and Paraphernalia Recovered

In addition to the heroin, detectives recovered a range of other illicit items during the search. These included two syringes and needles, which investigators believe were intended for drug use or demonstration to potential buyers. Officers also found ten rolls of bhang and three packets of Supermatch cigarettes.

While the heroin seizure remains the most significant aspect of the bust, the additional items point to broader involvement in narcotics handling and distribution. Investigators are now working to establish whether Kariuki was acting alone or as part of a wider criminal network.

Suspect in Custody as Investigations Intensify

Following the arrest, Kariuki was taken into police custody, where he remains as detectives finalize investigations ahead of his arraignment in court. Authorities are expected to charge him with multiple offenses under Kenya’s narcotics and psychotropic substances laws.

Detectives are also analyzing the suspect’s movements, phone records, and possible associates to determine the source of the drugs and identify other individuals involved in the trafficking chain. The motorcycle used during the operation has been impounded as an exhibit in the case.

DCI Reaffirms Zero Tolerance on Drug Trafficking

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has reiterated its unwavering commitment to combating drug trafficking across the country. In a statement, the agency emphasized that operations like the Nakuru heroin bust demonstrate the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and multi-agency collaboration.

“The DCI remains firmly committed to dismantling drug trafficking networks through relentless operations and coordinated efforts with other agencies,” the statement read. “We maintain zero tolerance for traffickers, regardless of their status, and will continue working to ensure a safer, drug-free Kenya for all.”

Nakuru Remains a Key Focus Area

Nakuru has in recent years emerged as a strategic focus for anti-narcotics operations due to its central location and transport links. Law enforcement agencies have intensified surveillance and intelligence gathering to curb the movement of drugs through the region.

Security experts say the latest seizure highlights both the persistence of drug trafficking attempts and the increasing effectiveness of law enforcement responses. “Every interception disrupts supply chains and sends a strong warning to traffickers,” said a criminology analyst familiar with narcotics cases in the Rift Valley.

Community Urged to Stay Vigilant

Authorities have called on members of the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities. Intelligence from citizens, officials say, plays a crucial role in successful operations such as the Nakuru heroin bust.

As Kariuki awaits his day in court, the Sh1.19 million heroin seizure stands as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against narcotics in Kenya—and a clear signal that traffickers remain firmly in the crosshairs of the law.
