Newcastle United have firmly dismissed reports suggesting that captain Bruno Guimarães has a release clause allowing him to leave if the club fails to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, dealing a significant blow to ongoing speculation linking the Brazilian midfielder with Arsenal.
Recent reports claimed Arsenal were monitoring Guimarães and could trigger a cut-price clause worth around £60 million following Newcastle’s failure to secure Champions League football. However, sources inside Newcastle have strongly denied that any such clause exists in the midfielder’s current contract.
According to ChronicleLive, the Magpies insist there is no automatic release clause tied to Champions League qualification and that Bruno remains fully committed to the club under his existing long-term contract. Newcastle have also rejected suggestions that they would entertain offers significantly below his market value.
The 28-year-old has become one of Newcastle’s most influential players since arriving from Lyon in January 2022. His leadership qualities earned him the captain’s armband, while his ability to dictate play from midfield has made him one of the Premier League’s standout performers.
Arsenal’s admiration for Guimarães is well documented. Manager Mikel Arteta is believed to be keen on strengthening his midfield with an experienced player capable of controlling games at the highest level. Despite that interest, there is currently no indication that Newcastle are willing to negotiate a sale unless an extraordinary offer is made.
Reports earlier this week suggested Arsenal had explored the possibility of signing the Brazil international, but Newcastle reportedly dismissed informal approaches and maintained that the midfielder is not for sale. Club insiders have continued to describe him as a central figure in Eddie Howe’s long-term plans.
The conflicting reports surrounding Guimarães’ contract have fueled intense debate during the summer transfer window. While some outlets claimed people close to the player believed a release clause existed, Newcastle officials have repeatedly denied those claims, insisting there is no contractual mechanism allowing him to leave at a discounted fee because of the club’s league finish.
Guimarães has consistently spoken about his affection for Newcastle and the supporters at St James’ Park. Although transfer speculation is expected to continue throughout the window, the club’s latest stance sends a clear message that they have no intention of losing one of their biggest stars.
Unless Arsenal or any other interested club submits an offer that Newcastle consider impossible to refuse, Guimarães is expected to remain at St James’ Park for the upcoming season.
With Newcastle determined to rebuild and challenge for European qualification once again, keeping hold of their captain would represent one of their biggest victories of the summer transfer window.
