Kenyan police officers are set to benefit from a significant salary increase, which is part of a broader reform agenda aimed at improving their working conditions. Beginning in July 2024, the government implemented the first phase of a 40% salary increment recommended by the task force chaired by retired Chief Justice David Maraga. This increase is to be spread out over three phases and aims to address issues such as low morale and underfunding in the National Police Service (NPS), as well as improve the overall effectiveness of the force.

The new salary structure affects various ranks within the service. For instance, newly recruited constables, who previously earned Ksh21,645 per month, are now expected to take home over Ksh30,000. Similarly, long-serving constables who earned Ksh38,975 will now see their pay rise to approximately Ksh40,354, with further increases expected as the other phases of the salary increment are implemented(The Star)(Business Today Kenya).

In addition to the police, prison officers and members of the National Youth Service (NYS) are also set to benefit from these reforms, with salary increases aligned to those of the police. The goal of these increments, according to President William Ruto, is to enhance service delivery within the security sector by ensuring that officers are adequately compensated for their efforts(Business Today Kenya)(The Star).

Officers in higher ranks will also see a rise in their pay. For example, a newly promoted sergeant, who previously earned around Ksh38,829, will now receive up to Ksh54,360 per month. Long-serving officers in the same rank will see their pay increase to Ksh77,068(Business Today Kenya)(The Star).

This salary increment is accompanied by a police equipment modernization program, valued at Ksh25 billion, which aims to improve working conditions and ensure that officers are better equipped to handle both internal and external security challenges(Business Today Kenya). Furthermore, the reform agenda spans four years, from 2024 to 2028, and will involve continuous evaluations to ensure the intended objectives are met.

With these changes, the government hopes to significantly uplift the living standards of security personnel, improve morale, and create a more effective security apparatus across the country.
