Tension gripped Khwisero in Kakamega County after police officers intercepted a white Toyota Hilux allegedly ferrying weapons during the Kisa East Ward by-election. The dramatic arrest, which took place in the Munjiti area, has sparked nationwide discussion as authorities intensify efforts to curb election-related violence.

According to police reports, officers on routine patrol became suspicious of the Toyota Hilux, registered as KCM 707J, which appeared to be making unusual movements around the polling center. Upon stopping the vehicle and conducting a search, the officers uncovered a cache of crude weapons hidden inside. The weapons included stones, heavy clubs, and other objects believed to have been intended for use in disrupting the electoral process.

The discovery immediately raised alarms, prompting the officers to take swift action. Four suspects who were inside the vehicle at the time were arrested on the spot. They were disarmed, placed under tight security, and escorted to the nearest police station for interrogation and further processing. Police say the individuals are currently in custody, awaiting formal charges and arraignment in court.

The presence of such weapons in a region conducting a crucial by-election has heightened concerns about attempts to influence or destabilize the democratic process. Local residents reported seeing unusual activities throughout the morning, with some expressing relief that the police intervened before any violence erupted.

Security officers emphasized that the patrols were part of broader efforts to ensure that the Kisa East Ward by-election proceeded peacefully. Their timely intervention, they said, prevented what could have escalated into a chaotic or violent incident.

The National Police Service (NPS) has since issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding peace and stability during electoral exercises. The statement emphasized zero tolerance for individuals or groups attempting to disrupt democratic proceedings through intimidation, violence, or illegal possession of weapons.

“As the nation continues to embrace democratic principles, we remain steadfast in ensuring that elections are conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner,” the NPS noted. “Our officers remain vigilant and ready to act decisively against any threats to public safety.”

The arrests serve as a stern warning to political groups and hired goons who may attempt to manipulate election outcomes through unlawful activities. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to establish who may have organized or financed the operation and whether the suspects have ties to broader networks seeking to influence the by-election.

Residents have praised the officers for their quick response, expressing hope that the incident will deter similar attempts in the future. Meanwhile, security has been heightened across the ward to ensure the remainder of the voting exercise and tallying process proceeds without disruption.
