NAKURU, Kenya – In a major breakthrough for law enforcement, a notorious gang terrorizing Nakuru County has been dismantled after a high-profile police operation led to the arrest of five suspects and the recovery of a deadly AK-47 rifle. The gang, responsible for a string of violent robberies and the murder of a police officer, was finally cornered following weeks of intelligence-led tracking.

The Dramatic Takedown

A specialized team of detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)’s Operation Action Team and Crime Research Bureau, working alongside Nakuru-based officers, conducted a meticulously planned raid on the gang’s hideouts. Acting on critical intelligence, the officers managed to flush out the suspects before apprehending them.

After interrogations, police were led to Rhoda area, where the AK-47 rifle (serial number 18916), loaded with three rounds of ammunition, was discovered hidden in dry grass near a residential home. The recovery of this weapon marks a significant victory for security forces, as the firearm had been used in multiple violent crimes across the county.

A Trail of Bloodshed

The gang’s reign of terror left behind grief, trauma, and unanswered questions for many Nakuru residents. Their most brazen attack occurred on June 1, 2025, when they ambushed a team of police officers on foot patrol, killing one and critically injuring two others. The fallen officer, whose identity has yet to be released, was shot at close range. His colleagues remain hospitalized.

In another horrifying incident, the gang targeted a 24-year-old shop owner in Soilo, Nakuru. After attacking him with machetes and daggers, they robbed his business of hundreds of thousands of shillings. But their brutality didn’t end there—they dragged the badly injured young man outside and executed him with a gunshot.

Residents report that the gang operated with chilling precision, striking fear into the hearts of business owners and pedestrians alike. Several other robberies and assaults have been linked to the group, painting a picture of a well-organized criminal enterprise.

The Suspects: Faces Behind the Terror

Police have identified the five suspects in custody as:

  1. William Nywhili Rioba
  2. Nyahili Nyamuhaga Magige
  3. Emmanuel Muita Muita
  4. Catherine Nkatha Zakayo
  5. Peter Chacha

The inclusion of a female suspect, Catherine Nkatha Zakayo, has raised eyebrows, with investigators probing whether she played a role in planning the attacks or acted as an informant.

Detectives from DCI Nakuru East are finalizing paperwork ahead of the suspects’ arraignment on Tuesday, June 3. They face multiple charges, including murder, armed robbery, and illegal firearm possession.

Police Assure Public of Enhanced Security

In a statement, the DCI sought to reassure Nakuru residents—and Kenyans at large—that security remains a top priority.

“Several anti-robbery squads have been deployed across the country to pursue identified armed gangs,” the statement read. “We are analyzing their operations and will not rest until our streets are free from these criminals.”

The operation signals a broader crackdown on armed gangs, particularly in regions where violent crime has surged. Authorities have vowed to dismantle similar networks operating in other counties.

Community Reactions: Relief and Anger

For Nakuru locals, the arrests bring mixed emotions.

“We can finally sleep at night,” said Margaret Wanjiku, a shopkeeper in Soilo. “But it’s painful knowing innocent lives were lost before action was taken.”

Others, however, remain skeptical.

“These gangs have sponsors—big people who give them guns and hide them,” claimed John Otieno, a boda boda rider. “Until those people are arrested, the problem won’t end.”

What’s Next?

As the suspects await trial, key questions linger:

  • Was this gang part of a larger syndicate?
  • How did they acquire the AK-47?
  • Are there more weapons still hidden?

Forensic experts are examining the recovered rifle to trace its origin and possible links to other crimes. Meanwhile, detectives are pursuing leads that could expose additional accomplices.

Conclusion: A Win, But the War Continues

While the arrests mark a critical victory, security analysts warn that Kenya’s fight against armed gangs is far from over.

“Criminals adapt quickly,” said security expert Joseph Kamau. “Police must stay ahead with better intelligence and community cooperation.”

For now, Nakuru residents can breathe a little easier—but the scars left by this violent gang will take much longer to heal.
