The political landscape in Luo Nyanza appears to be undergoing a generational transition, with Senator Oburu Oginga dropping strong hints about who could take over the community’s leadership mantle after Raila Odinga.

Speaking during a weekend event, Oburu — the elder brother of ODM leader Raila Odinga — indicated that the region’s next generation of political heavyweights may already be emerging, subtly pointing to Nairobi Senator Edwin W. Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino as potential future leaders of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the Luo community at large.

“We only have one leader of the Luo community at a time, and there is nowhere the person is elected,” Oburu said. “For the one who will lead us, like Raila led us in the Luo community, in which forum was he elected? We do not elect the leader of the community. That leader just sprouts like a mushroom. You will just see someone emerge and easily take up that mantle.”

The Siaya Senator further emphasized that the next influential figure will not come from Raila’s generation but from a younger crop of leaders who have demonstrated political acumen and loyalty to the ODM party.

“But the person is not among Raila’s peers, like us. There are young people coming up and ready to lead — you will just see the leader emerge among these young leaders,” he added.

His remarks have sparked widespread debate across social media and political circles, with many interpreting them as an informal endorsement of Sifuna and Babu Owino — two of ODM’s most outspoken and visible young leaders.

Edwin Sifuna, who also serves as the ODM Secretary General, has been instrumental in defending the party’s position on national issues, earning a reputation as a disciplined yet bold politician. Babu Owino, on the other hand, has built his image as a fearless mobilizer and one of the most vocal defenders of Raila Odinga’s political vision.

If Oburu’s sentiments are anything to go by, Luo Nyanza may soon witness a historic shift — one that could redefine the region’s political leadership for years to come, as the torch seemingly passes from Raila’s era to a new, younger generation.
