A section of senior Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders has held a high-level meeting as deepening cracks continue to shake Kenya’s main opposition party, raising fresh questions about unity, leadership, and the party’s future direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The closed-door meeting was revealed by ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna through a brief but telling post on X that read: “Sit. Talk. Tumeanza.” The message signaled the start of intense internal consultations at a time when the party is facing one of its most serious internal challenges in years.

Among those present were influential figures across generations and regions, including Siaya Governor James Orengo, Hon. Namoit, MP Turkana South, Senator Mumma Asige, Hon. Millie Odhiambo, Ruth Odinga, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Peter Imwatok, Hon. Reuben Ndolo, former Attorney General Hon. Amos Wako, Edwin Ngonga, and John Andiwo. The diversity of the leaders present underscores the gravity of the moment and the need for broad consensus.

ODM has been struggling to steady itself following leadership transitions and growing disagreements over party strategy, discipline, and engagement with the ruling administration. While some leaders favor cooperation and dialogue at the national level, others insist the party must remain firm as a strong opposition voice. These competing positions have played out publicly, exposing divisions that critics say weaken the party’s bargaining power and public image.

Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has emerged as a central figure in the ongoing debate, attracting both strong support and sharp criticism from within the party. Some ODM lawmakers have accused him of being confrontational, while his allies argue that he represents a bold, principled stand that resonates with younger voters and the party’s reformist roots.

Veteran leaders like Governor Orengo and Hon. Amos Wako are reportedly pushing for calm, dialogue, and internal resolution mechanisms, warning that open infighting could derail ODM’s long-term ambitions. At the same time, outspoken politicians such as Babu Owino and Millie Odhiambo continue to demand clarity on the party’s ideological direction and leadership accountability.

The meeting comes amid growing pressure from ODM supporters who fear that prolonged internal disputes could hand political advantage to rivals. With succession politics, generational transition, and national alliances all in play, the stakes for ODM could not be higher.

As consultations continue, the big question remains whether these talks will heal the widening rift or merely expose deeper fault lines within the party. For now, one thing is clear: ODM is at a crossroads, and the decisions made behind closed doors may redefine its future in Kenya’s political landscape.
