The Kenya Revenue Authority has come clean on taxation of till numbers according to recently released reports.
In a statement via KRA X platform formerly twitter, KRA rubbished viral social media reports that they are taxing till number, terming the report “not true.”
According to KRA, “till numbers are NOT subject to taxation, and KRA does not collect any such taxes.”
The taxman asked Kenyans to, “beware of fraudsters purporting to do any of the above.”
“Verify any KRA staff today on our website bit.ly/3W0Wvup or by dialing *572#.” Said KRA in a statement.
Earlier today, a report had emerged online claiming KRA personnel are moving around to collect tax from till numbers.
“Morning, if you have a shop or using Lipa na Mpesa for your business, most are being shut down (unafaa lipa tax for
it). customer can pay but as a merchant
you can’t access your money, since yesterday, thought it was maintenance but apparently most supermarkets and shops are opting out of lipa na Mpesa and out of pochi la biashara, so kindly look for alternative means of payments by clients.” A statement seen by the k47 digital news team read in part.
“I hear that they are walking around a taxing shop when they find lipa na mpesa till around Nairobi town.” Another social media user replied.
However KRA has termed the information fake news.
