Kenya-Somalia-Ethiopia borderlands joint venture with UK support.

The Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has revealed a joint venture of Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia borderlands project which he says will bolter cross-border cooperation.

The venture, the CS says will be supported by the UK Government and aims to promote peace and stability.

“The Kenya-Somalia-Ethiopia Borderlands Project, a joint venture with support from the UK Government, aims to promote peace and stability in the region and bolster cross-border cooperation.” Said Kindiki.

This project, the CS says, is opportune as the region grapples with complex and sensitive security challenges, that include terrorism and illicit trade.

“The help and support from the UK will enable the region deal with these complex security challenges.”

“The Security Compact signed between Kenya and the UK on Wednesday 10th May 2023 is subject to involvement and consultation with our neighbouring countries; Ethiopia and Somalia, to ensure no one is left behind.”

DP Rigathi Gachagua, who was also present noted that as Kenya leads peace initiatives at the Horn of Africa, a firsthand assessment of the situation on the ground and appreciation of the existing resources is important for better planning.

Gachagua, led by Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration Prof. Kithure Kindiki, British High Commissioner to Kenya Jane Marriott, Security Minister of Somalia, Minister for Peace and Security of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia, among other leaders, on the sidelines of the launch of the Kenya-Somalia- Ethiopia Borderlands Project, visited the border points of Somalia and Ethiopia at River Dawa.

Gachagua remarked that joint security initiatives at such border posts and around natural resources like rivers, ensures enhanced stability.

“We continue to foster the warmth we enjoy as a people for the stability of our Nations.” Said Gachagua.The second in command noted that for the next three years, the initiative will establish pragmatic structures of triggering and sustaining socio-economic development for the Northern frontier borderland, which has has been volatile due to constant threats from terrorism and violent inter/intracommunity conflicts.

This, he said, has for years negatively impacted the development of the region. Indeed, insecurity in one country is a concern for our neighbours. That is why even as Kenya remains stable, it is also our responsibility to work with partners in ensuring sustainable peace at the Horn of Africa.

“The Ruto Administration remains committed to regional peace; we invite such development initiatives to complement our efforts of helping the local communities take charge of their destiny of economic growth.

“We will work with our neighbours and implementing partners for this project to deliver the expected outcomes.”
