IPOA Press on monitoring police conduct during Azimio’s protest

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority Chairman Ann Makori has released a press on the conduct of police during the Azimio La Umoja’s protest.

In a statement to the press, IPOA says say it monitored the Monday protest on how police angaged in public order management in protest called by Azimio La Umoja coalition.

The Authority noted that has taken up four matters for investigations which will seek to
establish the level of police compliance with Article 244 of the Constitution, the Public
Order Act and any other laws related to public management and the use of force.

The matters under investigation include but are not limited to:

  1. An incident where a man was shot and killed allegedly by police in Kisumu County.
  2. An incident where a man was shot and injured allegedly by police in Kisumu County.
  3. An incident where a man was shot and injured allegedly by police in Migori County.
  4. Two incidents in which police failed to provide adequate security to protect private property in Nairobi County.

IPOA Monitors detailed that it will remain deployed on the ground to ensure accountability is served where due.

“The Authority strongly calls upon the police to abide by the law in exercising their constitutional function of protection of life and property in line with the National Police Service Act, Section 24 (d).” Said Ann Makori.

“The Authority can be reached via toll free number 1559, complaints@ipoa.go.ke to lodge cases of misconduct or commendations of the Police during today’s and future demonstrations.
IPOA assured that it remains committed to being independent, impartial and fair.
