Iten, Kenya – May 7, 2025 – In a dramatic anti-narcotics operation in the quiet town of Iten, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters arrested an Indian national and seized a large cache of pharmaceutical products believed to be unlicensed or illegally distributed.

The suspect, identified as Malik Aman, was apprehended in a high-stakes raid conducted at his residence by DCI’s specialized anti-narcotics unit. The operation was carried out under the authority of a court-sanctioned search warrant issued by an Iten magistrate.

According to reliable sources within the investigative team, Aman had been under close surveillance for weeks following intelligence reports suggesting his involvement in the illegal distribution of pharmaceutical products. Officers described the arrest as a significant breakthrough in the ongoing war against illicit drug trafficking and the illegal pharmaceutical trade in the country.

“The suspect had been under our radar for a while,” a source within the DCI confirmed. “Once we secured the search warrant, our team moved in swiftly and secured the scene.”

Upon entering the suspect’s residence, the detectives conducted a thorough search, during which they recovered a wide variety of pharmaceutical substances. Though the exact types and quantities of the drugs have not been disclosed publicly, DCI officials confirmed that the items were inventoried and taken away for forensic examination.

“We are treating the case with the seriousness it deserves,” another officer added. “All the recovered substances have been forwarded to the government chemist for forensic analysis to determine their composition and legality.”

The arrest has raised serious concerns over how foreign nationals may be exploiting loopholes in the regulatory system to import, store, or distribute unapproved medical substances within Kenyan borders.

Following his arrest, Malik Aman was initially detained but later released on cash bail to allow investigators sufficient time to conduct forensic examinations on the recovered substances.

This development comes at a time when the Kenyan government, in collaboration with agencies such as the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, is ramping up efforts to crack down on the circulation of counterfeit and unauthorized drugs in both urban and rural settings.

In recent years, Kenya has faced an increasing threat from illicit pharmaceutical networks operating under the guise of legitimate businesses. These networks pose a serious public health risk, as they often distribute counterfeit or expired medicines that can cause adverse health effects or, in some cases, death.

Health experts have continuously warned of the growing prevalence of unregulated pharmaceutical products in the Kenyan market. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), counterfeit medicines account for nearly 10% of all medical products in low and middle-income countries—a category that includes Kenya.

The DCI, in its statement, emphasized that the war against drug trafficking and the circulation of banned substances is far from over. The agency reiterated its commitment to hunting down individuals and cartels involved in the illegal drug trade—regardless of their nationality or social standing.

“Let this serve as a warning,” read part of the statement. “Anyone engaging in the illegal sale, distribution, or manufacturing of illicit drugs will be pursued relentlessly and held accountable under the law.”

The agency also encouraged members of the public to report any suspicious activity related to drugs in their communities, highlighting the critical role of community intelligence in dismantling criminal networks.

As investigations continue, many are now asking deeper questions: How did such a quantity of pharmaceutical substances enter the country without detection? Are there larger international syndicates at play? And what measures will authorities implement to prevent similar incidents in the future?

With the matter now under intense scrutiny and the substances undergoing forensic analysis, all eyes remain on the government chemist’s report, which is expected to shed light on the nature and potential danger of the seized items.

The outcome of this case could set a precedent for how future violations involving pharmaceutical contraband are handled, especially involving foreign nationals. For now, the DCI remains firm in its resolve to eradicate the menace of drug trafficking across the country.
