Nairobi, June 28, 2024 – A coalition of Nairobi youth, claiming to represent the voice of Gen Z, has faced swift backlash from the very demographic they seek to represent. The group, led by Newton Khamisi, announced their intention to facilitate intergenerational dialogue with President William Ruto’s government, addressing critical issues facing the youth. However, their efforts have been met with skepticism and outright rejection by many Gen Zs, who view the coalition as inauthentic and disconnected from their struggles.

The formation of this coalition comes in the wake of recent protests by Gen Z against a controversial financial bill that President Ruto declined to sign into law. These protests highlighted the frustration and discontent among the youth regarding economic policies and their impact on the younger generation. In light of this, the coalition’s announcement was expected to offer a platform for constructive dialogue. Instead, it has ignited further discord.

“Hawa wametoka wapi. Never seen them in x space,” remarked Mwalimu Wanjala, a prominent social media enthusiast, questioning the legitimacy of the coalition members. This sentiment was echoed across various social media platforms, where Gen Zs expressed their distrust of the group’s intentions and authenticity.

“Wapi picha zao wakila teargas? I thought Gen Z said they are leaderless and tribeless? If I were a Gen Z or a Millennial, I would only trust people who I met on the streets protesting and were vocal on social media. And we have plenty of such people on Twitter,” added another Gen Z commentator. This highlights a crucial point of contention: the perceived lack of genuine grassroots activism and representation within the coalition.

The distrust stems from a broader narrative within Gen Z, who pride themselves on being a leaderless and tribeless movement, unified by shared experiences and challenges rather than traditional hierarchies or affiliations. For many, the true representatives are those who have been actively involved in protests, enduring teargas and police crackdowns, and vocalizing their concerns on social media platforms.

Newton Khamisi and his coalition, however, maintain that their intentions are genuine. “We understand the skepticism, but our goal is to bridge the gap and ensure that the voices of our generation are heard at the highest levels,” Khamisi stated in a press release. He emphasized the need for a structured dialogue with the government to address issues such as unemployment, education, and economic opportunities for the youth.

Despite these assurances, the backlash underscores a significant challenge: the deep-seated mistrust among Gen Z towards formalized structures and representatives who they feel do not genuinely reflect their experiences and struggles. The coalition’s ability to gain the trust of Gen Z will depend on their actions in the coming days, particularly their engagement with the broader youth community and their response to the criticisms levied against them.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether this coalition can overcome the skepticism and establish itself as a legitimate voice for Gen Z, or if the movement will continue to reject any form of structured representation in favor of a more organic, grassroots approach to activism and advocacy. For now, the message from Gen Z is clear: authenticity and proven commitment to their cause are paramount.
