A social media poll conducted by Wiper-nominated MCA Hon. Mbithe Mulinge has sparked fresh political debate after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna recorded an overwhelming lead over President William Ruto, Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Mulinge conducted the poll on her X account, asking followers whom they would choose as Kenya’s next president if elections were held today.

The poll attracted 12,915 voters, with Sifuna emerging as the clear favourite.

According to the results shared on X, Edwin Sifuna received 88 per cent of the total votes. President William Ruto came a distant second with 6 per cent, while Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka received 4 per cent.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua finished fourth with just 2 per cent of the votes.

The results quickly generated discussion among Kenyans on social media, particularly because Sifuna has recently emerged as one of the opposition figures being mentioned in conversations about the 2027 presidential election.

Despite the huge margin recorded by Sifuna, the poll should not be treated as a scientific opinion survey representing the views of the entire Kenyan electorate. X polls are voluntary and largely reflect the audience and followers of the account conducting the poll.

Sifuna, who serves as Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary-General, has increasingly attracted attention as political parties and opposition leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

His name has also featured in discussions about possible opposition alliances. Former Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana has previously expressed support for Sifuna’s presidential ambitions, arguing that his age should not prevent him from seeking the country’s top seat.

Kalonzo Musyoka has also spoken about the possibility of supporting Sifuna if opposition leaders agree on him as their preferred presidential candidate. However, Wiper has clarified that no final agreement has been reached on Kalonzo becoming Sifuna’s running mate.

The 2027 presidential contest is expected to become increasingly competitive as political parties negotiate alliances and potential candidates begin building nationwide support.

President William Ruto is expected to defend his position, while opposition figures continue exploring ways of presenting a united challenge.

For now, the striking 88 per cent showing for Sifuna in Mulinge’s online poll has added another layer to Kenya’s increasingly active 2027 political conversation. Whether the social media support reflected in the poll can translate into nationwide electoral support, however, remains a much bigger question.
