Isiolo County, Kenya — Tensions in Isiolo have eased after security agencies, community elders, and local leaders teamed up to recover stolen livestock following a series of thefts and retaliatory raids.

The dramatic turn of events began earlier this month when suspected cattle rustlers made away with five cows from a resident in Isiolo. The theft was promptly reported at Isiolo Police Station, sparking concerns about possible retaliation. Those fears came true when herdsmen from the affected community carried out a counter-raid in Lurubae, Archers Post, making off with an undisclosed number of goats and sheep. This second incident was documented at Archers Post Police Station.

Determined to prevent further escalation, the National Police Service joined forces with National Government Administration Officers and respected elders from both sides. They launched a coordinated recovery operation aimed at tracing the stolen animals and restoring peace between the warring groups.

Yesterday, in a symbolic display of reconciliation, the recovered animals were officially handed back to their rightful owners during a brief but significant meeting at Ngaremara Centre. The event was attended by the OCS Archers Post, the Assistant Chief of Attan Location (Ngaremara Division), influential community elders, and local leaders.

The operation resulted in the recovery of eight cows and 120 goats — a figure that exceeded the original report of stolen livestock, suggesting that the collaborative efforts also uncovered animals taken in previous raids.

Speaking at the handover, local leaders emphasized that this was more than just a livestock recovery — it was a critical step toward mending fractured community relations. The presence of law enforcement alongside traditional leaders highlighted a shared commitment to promoting peace, curbing cattle rustling, and fostering long-term cooperation between neighboring communities.

The successful operation has been hailed as a model for addressing livestock theft in pastoralist areas, where such crimes often spark prolonged conflicts. Authorities have urged residents to report thefts promptly and to avoid retaliatory actions that can escalate into cycles of violence.

For Isiolo, this recovery marks a hopeful chapter — one where dialogue, trust, and unity prevailed over revenge and division.
