Renowned blogger and political commentator Robert Alai has ignited a heated debate online after asserting that President William Ruto is significantly better in leadership than his predecessors, Uhuru Kenyatta and Mwai Kibaki. Alai, who is known for his bold opinions, made the remarks in a 12-minute video posted on X platform (formerly Twitter), sparking a flurry of reactions from both critics and supporters alike.

Ruto Compared to Former Presidents Uhuru and Kibaki

In his video, Alai did not shy away from making strong claims. He stated that while Ruto might not be perfect, his governance has been a marked improvement over that of Uhuru Kenyatta and Mwai Kibaki. Alai specifically accused the Uhuru Kenyatta administration of gross human rights violations, going as far as to claim that rivers were “filled with the bodies of Kenyans” during his regime. He also noted that prominent figures like Martha Karua and Kabando wa Kabando remained silent during Uhuru’s presidency, implying that their criticism now was driven by ethnic motivations rather than genuine concern for the nation.

Alai’s Response to Rigathi Gachagua’s Claims Against Ruto

The timing of Alai’s remarks seems to be in direct response to recent statements made by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has found himself embroiled in a political feud with President Ruto. Gachagua, who recently left Karen Hospital after being treated for an undisclosed ailment, accused Ruto of treating him “like an animal” while he was hospitalized. The Deputy President went as far as to claim that Ruto had attempted to take his life on three separate occasions. These accusations have further deepened the rift between the two leaders.

Alai, however, was quick to dismiss Gachagua’s accusations. He suggested that Gachagua was merely reaping what he had sown, having cultivated a political environment of bitterness and hostility. According to Alai, Gachagua’s current situation is the result of his own actions, and the blogger believes that Gachagua’s issues with Ruto are self-inflicted.

Ruto’s Loyalty to His Allies

One of the core arguments in Alai’s defense of President Ruto is the loyalty that the President commands from leaders in the Mt. Kenya region, which is Gachagua’s political backyard. Alai pointed out that many of the region’s Members of Parliament openly pledge loyalty to Ruto rather than Gachagua, citing Ruto’s role in building and investing in their political careers. According to Alai, Ruto was instrumental in nurturing and supporting these politicians when they needed him most, which has earned him their undivided loyalty.

Alai’s claim that Gachagua has failed to foster any meaningful relationships with leaders from his region since becoming Deputy President only strengthens his argument that Ruto is a better leader. The blogger criticized Gachagua for not making the most of his position and failing to build strong alliances that would ensure his political survival.

Gachagua’s Alleged Betrayal of Ruto

The video takes an even more dramatic turn when Alai addresses Gachagua’s betrayal of Ruto. According to Alai, despite Gachagua’s harsh words towards the President, he should acknowledge Ruto’s ability to reward his friends and loyalists. Alai pointed out that Ruto has a track record of elevating individuals who might not have otherwise had a chance in politics or public service.

For instance, Alai highlighted the case of former Cabinet Secretary (CS) Rashid Echesa, who, despite being a class four dropout, was molded into a reputable figure under Ruto’s mentorship. Alai also mentioned the rise of Aisha Jumwa, noting that she could not have achieved a Cabinet position, even in Somalia, without Ruto’s backing. These examples, according to Alai, demonstrate Ruto’s willingness to elevate and reward those who remain loyal to him.

Economic Achievements Under Ruto’s Presidency

Alai also took the opportunity to praise President Ruto’s economic achievements, particularly his efforts to lower the cost of living. The blogger noted that since Ruto took office, the cost of living has steadily decreased, which has been a welcome relief for many Kenyans who had struggled under previous administrations. This, according to Alai, is one of the key reasons why Ruto is a better president than Uhuru or Kibaki.

He argued that Ruto’s focus on economic empowerment and his dedication to improving the lives of ordinary Kenyans have set him apart from his predecessors, who were often accused of being out of touch with the realities on the ground.

Alai’s Bold Verdict on Ruto’s Presidency

In conclusion, Alai’s video presents a bold and controversial verdict on President Ruto’s presidency. While acknowledging that Ruto is not without his flaws, the blogger remains adamant that the current president is far superior to both Uhuru Kenyatta and Mwai Kibaki in terms of leadership and governance. Alai’s praise for Ruto’s loyalty to his allies, his ability to elevate those around him, and his economic policies have resonated with many of the president’s supporters.

However, the video has also drawn criticism from those who believe that Alai’s remarks are an attempt to downplay the challenges facing the country under Ruto’s leadership. The accusations against Gachagua, in particular, have raised questions about the state of unity within the ruling administration and the potential political fallout from the Deputy President’s claims.

As the political landscape in Kenya continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how these dynamics will play out. What is clear, however, is that Alai’s comments have added fuel to the ongoing debate about the legacy of Kenya’s leaders and the direction of the country under President Ruto’s rule.
