Nanyuki police have stepped up their fight against the sale and consumption of illicit alcohol in Laikipia County, with a successful evening raid that left one suspect in custody and litres of chang’aa seized.
The operation, conducted yesterday evening in Likii Estate, Nanyuki, was spearheaded by officers from Nanyuki Police Station following an intelligence-led crackdown on chang’aa dens in the area.
According to police reports, officers recovered 54 litres of illicit alcohol suspected to be chang’aa during the raid. The suspect arrested at the scene was taken to Nanyuki Police Station for processing, while the seized brew was preserved as evidence to be presented in court.
Authorities say the latest Laikipia illicit brew crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to protect residents from the devastating effects of illegal substances. In recent years, chang’aa in Kenya has been linked to health complications, blindness, and even deaths, making it one of the most dangerous outlawed brews in the country.
In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) lauded members of the public for volunteering information and urged for continued collaboration.
“The fight against illicit alcohol requires community participation. We encourage residents to keep reporting illegal activities so that together we can build a safer, healthier society,” said a police spokesperson.
The crackdown in Nanyuki, Laikipia East Sub-County, adds to a series of nationwide operations aimed at dismantling networks involved in the production and distribution of illegal brews in Kenya. Police have assured the public that such operations will continue until the menace is fully eradicated.
