In a dramatic breakthrough, detectives in Kisumu have arrested two notorious suspects linked to a horrifying gang-rape and robbery incident that has shocked residents across the region. The two were dramatically apprehended following a high-speed chase through Kisumu City streets, bringing to an end a reign of terror stretching from Yala to Maseno.

The incident traces back to the night of May 12, 2025, when a woman and her cousin left Billionaires Bar and Restaurant at Kisiani Market. As they approached their gate in Ongallo village, a grey Toyota Axio suddenly screeched to a halt. Without warning, three machete-wielding men emerged and forcefully dragged the woman into their vehicle, as her cousin managed to escape and raise the alarm.

As the abductors fled, they used the victim’s phone to demand money while driving her into the night. Hours later, the woman was found in distress at Daraja Mbili, along Kiboswa Road. She had been gang-raped and stripped of her belongings.

What followed was an intensive manhunt led by Kisumu West detectives, working hand-in-hand with the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) officers from the Nyanza region.

Forensic analysis and digital footprints led investigators to Kisumu City Centre, where they spotted the grey Toyota Axio—registration KDA 019U. What ensued was a heart-pounding chase from Patel Junction towards Kondele, ending when the vehicle lost control and crashed.

The driver, identified as Fredrick Oduor Ongori, believed to be the gang’s mastermind, was arrested on the spot. After hours of interrogation, he confessed and directed officers to Obunga slums, where his accomplice, John Okumu Owidhi, also known by the alias Matools, was hiding.

Kisumu County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO) James Karanja confirmed the arrests, saying,

“These individuals thought they could hide forever, but our teams were relentless. This is a huge breakthrough for us and the victims.”

A preliminary background check revealed that both suspects are jailbreak fugitives who had been on the police radar for months. They are now in custody and assisting detectives with investigations as the manhunt expands to capture other members of the gang.

Residents in the region have welcomed the arrests with relief.

“We’ve been living in fear. The streets haven’t been safe at night. We thank the police for acting swiftly,” said Mary Atieno, a Kisumu resident.

The suspects are expected to be arraigned in court soon as detectives pursue justice for the victim and intensify operations to dismantle the broader criminal syndicate.
