When Victoria Kamai first heard stories about Kenya’s prestigious Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), she was just a young girl growing up in Namibia, dreaming of one day making her mark in healthcare.

Now, that dream has become a reality.

In March 2025, Victoria touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, wide-eyed and full of hope, as she officially began her long-awaited journey at KMTC.

Dreams Are Born Early

Victoria’s story isn’t just about a young woman chasing an education; it’s about the power of dreams, inspiration, and persistence.

“I always dreamed of studying at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC),” she says with a bright smile, her voice still full of disbelief at how far she has come.

Her inspiration came early, thanks to a family member who paved the way.

“My aunt Esther Mvula studied Pharmacy at the University of Nairobi and used to tell me wonderful things about KMTC. She met Mr. Ronald Wasike, who is now the Registrar at KMTC, during her time there. Her stories stuck with me,” Victoria narrates.

These stories created a strong foundation for what would become a lifelong ambition.

By the time she was in high school, Victoria’s mind was already made up. She was determined to join the thousands of students who proudly call KMTC home.

“I would follow KMTC on social media,” she recalls. “Every time I saw a post about students doing amazing things, I would quietly tell myself, one day that will be me.”

Victoria’s vision was not just a fleeting wish; it was a carefully nurtured goal she worked hard to achieve.

Bold Steps Toward a New Future

After completing her secondary education and achieving impressive grades, Victoria decided it was time to make her move.

Instead of waiting for opportunity to knock, she knocked first—by contacting KMTC directly to inquire about joining.

The process wasn’t easy. There were forms to fill, requirements to meet, and countless emails back and forth. But Victoria stayed the course.

Finally, in March 2025, she received the green light.

“I landed in Nairobi on March 17, 2025, shortly after 2.00 am. And there it was, the College van waiting to pick me up at the airport,” she says.

Her voice trembles slightly when she recalls the moment.

“In that moment, my heart was racing. It felt surreal. I couldn’t believe my long-held dream of joining KMTC was finally happening.”

Her welcome was nothing short of magical. The College had already arranged accommodation and even assigned fellow students to help her settle in.

“I felt like I was walking into a family, not just an institution,” she smiles.

A New Chapter Begins

Victoria is now enrolled in a Certificate in Medical Engineering at KMTC’s Nairobi campus, marking the beginning of what she hopes will be a long and impactful career.

“Everyone I have met so far has been incredibly friendly,” she says. “It feels like home.”

Though it was her first time in Kenya, she found the transition surprisingly smooth.

One key reason? Language.

“There is a certain rhythm and closeness between Kiswahili and my native language, Oshiwambo,” she explains. “That, plus the kindness of the students here, really made me feel at home.”

Victoria’s story highlights how education can serve as a bridge between cultures, creating bonds that go beyond borders.

“Every office I walk into, people are kind and helpful,” she notes. “That human touch made a big difference. I really hope KMTC continues to nurture that culture.”

Big Dreams, Bigger Goals

Victoria is not stopping at a certificate.

“My plan is to pursue a Diploma, then a Higher Diploma, and eventually a PhD,” she says determinedly.

Her ultimate goal?

“To one day help my country train the next generation of healthcare professionals.”

Victoria strongly believes that KMTC is the right place for her to achieve those dreams.

“KMTC is the best place to study if you want to pursue a career in health. I am so glad I landed here.”

KMTC’s Expanding International Presence

Victoria’s arrival at KMTC is not just a personal victory; it also highlights the institution’s growing reputation across Africa and beyond.

According to KMTC Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Kelly Oluoch, more international students, especially from Namibia, are expected to join KMTC soon.

“We are finalizing a few logistical issues, and we expect additional students from Namibia to join us, possibly in the September intake,” Dr. Oluoch said during an interview.

Dr. Oluoch emphasized that KMTC has a rich history of welcoming students from across the continent.

“This is not the first time we have welcomed students outside Kenya,” he said. “For decades, we have admitted learners from Malawi, DR Congo, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, Zimbabwe, among others.”

The influx of international students underscores KMTC’s growing global footprint.

“KMTC has become a global brand,” Dr. Oluoch affirmed. “Our programs are sought after around the world. We are currently running exchange programs with institutions like the University of British Columbia, among others.”

The CEO added that the global competitiveness of KMTC is not just a slogan—it’s a reality.

“When we say we are globally competitive, this is exactly what we mean. Our graduates are in demand internationally, and students from abroad are keen to train with us. We are not just saying it, we are living it,” Dr. Oluoch concluded.

A Story That Inspires Many

Victoria’s journey from Namibia to Nairobi is a powerful reminder that dreams do come true—with determination, hard work, and a little bit of courage.

It’s also a testament to the role institutions like KMTC play in shaping lives beyond their borders.

Already, Victoria’s story has started to inspire others back home in Namibia.

“My friends and former classmates keep asking me how I made it happen,” she says, laughing.

She’s more than happy to share her journey—and hopes many more will follow.

“I tell them: if you have a dream, follow it. Don’t wait for someone to hand it to you. Work for it,” she advises.

Final Thoughts: Why Victoria’s Story Matters

Victoria Kamai’s story is more than just a feel-good moment. It speaks to a larger narrative about access to education, international collaboration, and the courage it takes to step into the unknown.

In her own words:

“Dreams are real. They can come true. But you have to believe in yourself first.”

Her journey also highlights KMTC’s commitment to fostering an environment where every student, whether from Kenya or abroad, feels welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed.

If Victoria’s story is any indication, the future of healthcare in Namibia—and beyond—is in very good hands.
