Residents Terrified as Notorious Gang Returns – CCTV Footage Exposes Brutal Robbery Attempt

Mtwapa, Kilifi County – Despite a massive police crackdown targeting the infamous Panga Boys gang, terrified residents in Mtwapa have reported a shocking resurgence of the violent group.

According to blogger Cyprian Nyakundi who shared a video footage on his X platform local homeowner shared chilling CCTV footage with his news outlet, revealing the gang’s bold robbery attempt at his compound. The footage shows the attackers armed with pangas, forcing their way in before fleeing with stolen items.

Even more alarming? They returned with a larger gang shortly after, raising fears that police operations have failed to dismantle the criminal network.

This comes just weeks after authorities launched a major operation, arresting over 200 suspects in Kwale and Kisauni. But with the gang now resurfacing in Mtwapa, are law enforcement efforts enough?

Police Crackdown Fails to Stop Panga Menace

The government’s intensified operations against the Panga Boys began on March 25, 2025, when police detained 33 suspects linked to violent attacks in Diani. A Kwale court granted a 14-day detention order, allowing investigators to hold the suspects across multiple police stations in Kwale, Msambweni, and Diani.

Coast Regional Commander Ali Nunow vowed to crush the gang, engaging community leaders and security teams in a multi-agency approach.

Yet, just days later, on April 4, 2025, police arrested nine more suspects in Msambweni, recovering:

  • 11 pangas
  • Knives
  • Cannabis
  • A toy gun
  • Other gang-related tools

This followed the earlier arrests of 51 gang members in Kisauni and 120 in Kwale after a bloody attack on Diani residents.

Despite these efforts, the Mtwapa CCTV footage proves the gang is far from defeated.

Inside the Mtwapa Robbery: CCTV Footage Exposes Gang’s Tactics

The resident, who requested anonymity for safety reasons, shared disturbing footage of the attack.

  • First Attempt: A small group of Panga Boys broke into the compound, stealing minor items before fleeing.
  • Second Wave: They returned with reinforcements, suggesting they were scouting for a larger robbery.

“They are fearless,” the victim said. “Even with police patrols, they strike at night, knowing we are helpless.”

Why Are the Panga Boys Still Active?

Security experts suggest several reasons for the gang’s resilience:

  1. Rapid Recruitment – The gang replaces arrested members quickly, often recruiting unemployed youth.
  2. Corruption Claims – Some locals allege that police collusion allows the gang to evade capture.
  3. Weak Prosecutions – Many suspects are released due to lack of evidence, emboldening the criminals.
  4. Social Media Influence – The gang uses platforms like TikTok and Facebook to intimidate victims and glorify violence.

Government Response: More Arrests or Empty Promises?

Coast Regional Commissioner Ali Nunow insists operations will continue:

“We have intensified patrols and intelligence gathering. Anyone linked to these gangs will face the full force of the law.”

However, residents remain skeptical.

“Every time police arrest them, they come back stronger,” said a Mtwapa businessman. “We need permanent solutions, not just temporary crackdowns.”

What’s Next for Mtwapa Residents?

With the Panga Boys adapting to police tactics, locals are taking matters into their own hands:

  • Forming vigilante groups to patrol neighborhoods.
  • Installing more CCTV cameras to deter attacks.
  • Demanding better police-community cooperation.

Yet, without stronger prosecutions and economic opportunities for at-risk youth, the cycle of violence may continue.

Conclusion: Will the Panga Boys Ever Be Stopped?

The resurgence of the Panga Boys in Mtwapa proves that police crackdowns alone are not enough. While authorities have made arrests, the gang’s ability to reorganize and strike again highlights deeper issues:

  • Poverty and unemployment driving youth into crime.
  • Weak judicial processes allowing suspects back on the streets.
  • Lack of trust between police and communities.

Until these root causes are addressed, residents in Kilifi and Kwale may continue living in fear.
