The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has dismissed claims circulating on social media about an ongoing KCSE certificate grade upgrade program as false. In a statement seen by K47 Digital News, KNEC flagged the reports, dated January 4, 2025, as a scam aimed at misleading the public.

KNEC Dismisses Grade Change Claims

A widely circulated post on social media claimed that KCSE certificate grade upgrading was available for students who sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) between 2000 and 2024. The post included a link for candidates to submit their details, promising them a chance to improve their grades.

KNEC, however, has categorically denied any such initiative, warning the public against falling for the scam. The council emphasized that KCSE results are final and cannot be altered after they have been released.

“The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has not reopened any grade upgrade slots. Such reports are misleading and should be ignored,” read part of KNEC’s statement.

How the KCSE Certificate Upgrade Scam Works

The fraudulent message claimed that candidates could apply for a grade upgrade by filling out an online form. The scammers requested personal details from unsuspecting individuals, which could potentially be used for identity theft or other fraudulent activities.

The fake announcement targeted students who had failed KCSE or wanted to improve their grades for career advancement. Many unsuspecting individuals were lured into the scam, believing that KNEC had introduced a new system for revising results.

KNEC’s Warning to the Public

KNEC has urged all former and current KCSE candidates to verify any examination-related information through official channels, including its website (www.knec.ac.ke) and official social media pages.

The examinations body further advised the public not to share personal details with unverified websites or individuals claiming to offer certificate alterations.

“Any modifications to KCSE results would compromise the integrity of national examinations. Candidates should be wary of fraudsters promising grade changes in exchange for money,” KNEC warned.

No Shortcut to Changing KCSE Grades

According to education experts, KCSE grades are final once released, and there is no legal or official way to change them. The only legitimate process related to KCSE certificates is the replacement of lost or damaged documents through KNEC.

  • Visiting the official KNEC website to confirm result details.
  • Contacting KNEC offices or their respective former schools for verification.

Final Word

KNEC’s warning comes at a time when digital fraud cases in Kenya are on the rise, with criminals exploiting students and job seekers through fake online opportunities.

To avoid falling victim to such scams, students and parents are urged to always rely on KNEC’s official communication channels and report any suspicious activities related to KCSE certificate upgrades or grade changes.
