The nationwide university lecturers’ strike in Kenya is officially over after the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) signed a Return to Work Formula with the Government and the Inter-Public Universities Councils Consultative Forum (IPUCCF), paving the way for the resumption of teaching and other academic activities in public universities.

The breakthrough follows weeks of negotiations between university staff unions and the government over the implementation of the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which had resulted in a nationwide industrial action that disrupted learning, research and other academic programmes.

In an announcement made on Friday, October 30, 2026, UASU confirmed that it had reached an agreement with the government, bringing the industrial action that started on October 2 to an end.

Under the new agreement, the government has committed KSh 20 billion towards the implementation of the 2025–2029 CBA, which will cater for salary adjustments and improvements in allowances for university academic staff.

The union has consequently directed its members to resume teaching, research and other academic responsibilities on Monday, November 2, 2026.

The announcement is expected to bring relief to thousands of university students who have spent several weeks away from normal classroom learning because of the lecturers’ strike.

Government Releases KSh 20 Billion for University Staff CBA

One of the biggest achievements of the negotiations is the government’s commitment to provide KSh 20 billion towards implementing the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The money will be released in three financial-year instalments to facilitate the implementation of the negotiated salary and allowance improvements.

The funding will be distributed as follows:

Financial YearGovernment Allocation
2026/2027KSh 6.7 billion
2027/2028KSh 6.7 billion
2028/2029KSh 6.6 billion
TotalKSh 20 billion

The commitment represents a significant breakthrough following disagreements over the amount of money required to implement the new collective bargaining agreement.

UASU had previously rejected several government proposals, arguing that the offers were insufficient to address the remuneration concerns of university academic staff.

The negotiations eventually resulted in an improved KSh 20 billion offer, which paved the way for the signing of the return-to-work agreement.

University Lecturers to Receive 3.5% Annual Salary Increase

Under the new 2025–2029 CBA agreement, university academic staff will benefit from an annual increase of 3.5% in their basic salaries for four years.

The salary adjustment will be backdated to July 1, 2025, meaning that eligible university employees will also be entitled to the applicable salary arrears arising from the agreement.

The agreement further provides for a 5% annual automatic salary increment.

This is expected to improve the remuneration of academic staff across different job groups in public universities, including graduate assistants, tutorial fellows, assistant lecturers, lecturers, senior lecturers, associate professors and professors.

The actual salary received by individual employees will depend on their job grades, applicable allowances and statutory deductions.

The salary adjustments form part of the wider agreement aimed at improving the welfare of university employees and addressing concerns that contributed to the nationwide industrial action.

Allowances to Increase Under the New Agreement

Apart from the basic salary increments, the agreement provides for the harmonisation and enhancement of several allowances payable to university academic staff.

The allowances covered include:

  • Commuter allowance.
  • Leave allowance.
  • Passage allowance.
  • Baggage allowance.

The changes are intended to improve staff welfare and address disparities in allowances across different categories of academic employees in public universities.

The agreement also provides for the payment of accrued salary and allowance arrears arising from the implementation of the new CBA.

According to details announced by the union, arrears covering July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026, will be paid in three instalments.

Arrears covering July 1, 2026, to December 31, 2026, will be paid together with January 2027 salaries.

The implementation of these provisions will be closely monitored by university staff as they return to their respective institutions.

UASU Directs Lecturers to Resume Work on November 2

Following the signing of the Return to Work Formula, UASU has instructed all its members to resume teaching, research and other academic duties on Monday, November 2, 2026.

The directive officially ends the strike that had paralysed academic activities in several public universities across Kenya.

University students who had been waiting for the resolution of the dispute can now prepare to return to lecture halls as institutions work towards restoring their academic programmes.

The Ministry of Education and university managements are also expected to coordinate the resumption of learning and review academic calendars to accommodate the lost teaching time.

This will be particularly important for students whose examinations, graduation preparations, coursework assessments and other academic activities were affected by the industrial action.

Universities will need to communicate revised academic schedules to students to ensure that the remaining semester activities are completed without unnecessary confusion.

Government Agrees to Protect Lecturers Who Participated in the Strike

Another significant provision in the Return to Work Formula concerns the protection of university employees who participated in the nationwide industrial action.

Under the agreement, disciplinary proceedings initiated against employees because of their participation in the strike will be deemed withdrawn.

Additionally, employees serving on fixed-term contracts will not be disadvantaged when their contracts come up for renewal because they participated in the industrial action.

The provision is expected to ease concerns among university staff who feared possible disciplinary action or victimisation after taking part in the strike.

It also provides an opportunity for university managements and academic staff to rebuild working relationships following weeks of disagreements.

What the End of the UASU Strike Means for University Students

The decision by UASU to call off the nationwide lecturers’ strike is welcome news for thousands of students in Kenya’s public universities.

The industrial action disrupted normal academic activities, leaving students uncertain about the completion of their semesters, examinations and graduation programmes.

Some students continued incurring accommodation, transport and other living expenses despite the interruption of classroom learning.

With lecturers expected to resume work on November 2, attention now shifts to the restoration of normal university operations.

Universities will have to establish appropriate arrangements for recovering lost teaching time while ensuring that examinations and graduation ceremonies are not unnecessarily delayed.

The government will also be expected to honour its financial commitments under the newly signed agreement to prevent another dispute over the implementation of the CBA.

Conclusion: University Lecturers’ Strike Officially Over

The signing of the KSh 20 billion Return to Work Formula marks a major breakthrough in the dispute between UASU and the government over the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The agreement provides for annual basic salary increases of 3.5%, improved allowances, payment of outstanding arrears and protection of employees who participated in the industrial action.

Most importantly, the deal has cleared the way for university lecturers to resume their academic responsibilities on Monday, November 2, 2026.

For thousands of students who have endured weeks of interrupted learning, the announcement brings renewed hope that normal academic activities will finally resume.

However, the real test will be the timely implementation of the KSh 20 billion agreement and the government’s ability to honour all the commitments made to university staff.

THE STRIKE IS OFFICIALLY OVER!
