The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has officially opened its application portal for 20,000 permanent and pensionable post-primary teaching positions in Junior Schools, giving thousands of qualified Kenyan teachers a fresh opportunity to secure employment.

The recruitment window opened on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, and applicants have until midnight on Monday, August 31, 2026, to submit their applications. TSC has emphasized that applications must be made online, with manual applications not accepted.

The recruitment comes at a critical time for Kenya’s education sector, which continues to grapple with teacher shortages as the country implements the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system.

TSC Opens 20,000 Junior School Teaching Vacancies

The 20,000 positions are intended for teachers who will serve in Junior Schools across the country. Recruitment will be guided by staffing requirements in individual counties, meaning the distribution of successful applicants will depend on the number of vacancies available in each area.

According to the official recruitment notice, candidates must be Kenyan citizens, registered teachers with TSC and holders of at least a Diploma in Education. Applicants are also required to have attained a minimum KCSE mean grade of C+ (plus) and at least C+ in two teaching subjects, or equivalent qualifications recognized by the Commission.

Candidates must also be unemployed and should not have previously exited the teaching service because of disciplinary grounds.

TSC has encouraged qualified teachers to take advantage of the opportunity because the recruitment is not restricted exclusively to serving interns. This means unemployed teachers who meet the requirements can also compete for the advertised positions.

Junior School Interns Get a Major Advantage

Although the positions are open to eligible unemployed teachers, serving Junior School interns are particularly important in the current recruitment exercise.

Thousands of teachers have been working under the Junior School internship programme as Kenya gradually expands staffing under the Competency-Based Curriculum. The government has already committed resources toward converting a portion of these interns to permanent and pensionable employment.

The 2026/27 budget provides approximately KSh4.9 billion for the conversion of 20,000 intern teachers to permanent and pensionable terms from January 2027, according to the National Assembly’s official Hansard. A further KSh8.2 billion was proposed for converting another 24,000 newly recruited interns from July 2027.

This brings the planned conversion of interns to 44,000, although the timing and specific recruitment arrangements have generated considerable attention among teachers.

The Star reported that TSC’s current advertisement does not make it entirely clear whether the 20,000 positions advertised for August applications are exactly the same positions linked to the 20,000 interns earmarked for conversion in January 2027.

Why the 20,000 Jobs Matter

The recruitment comes against the backdrop of a significant teacher shortage in Kenya.

Junior Schools were introduced as part of the transition from the traditional 8-4-4 education structure to the Competency-Based Curriculum and subsequently the Competency-Based Education framework. The changes created new demands for teachers with appropriate subject specialization.

Parliament previously reported that Kenya’s overall teacher shortage stood at 98,461 teachers in 2025, while the government had recruited tens of thousands of teachers since the introduction of Junior Secondary Schools.

The staffing challenge has been particularly visible in Junior Schools, where teachers have sometimes had to handle large classes and teach multiple learning areas.

A government education programme has previously identified a target of supporting 78,000 teachers teaching Junior School, including teachers in areas such as Integrated Science, Mathematics and English.

Therefore, while 20,000 permanent jobs will not completely eliminate the shortage, the recruitment could significantly improve staffing levels in schools with the greatest needs.

What Applicants Need to Know

Teachers interested in the positions should ensure that their TSC registration and academic information are accurate before submitting their applications.

TSC’s online system allows teachers to apply for advertised vacancies and track the progress of their applications. The Commission’s online services portal also states that teachers applying online do not need to submit hard copies and that no payment is required for the application.

The Commission has also warned applicants to be cautious of individuals claiming they can secure employment in exchange for money. The recruitment exercise is free, and candidates should not pay brokers, officials or intermediaries promising employment.

Selection will be conducted on merit and according to the number of vacancies available in each county. Successful candidates will teach various learning areas under the Junior School curriculum. Serving teacher interns who secure permanent employment are expected to remain at their current stations or sub-counties, according to the recruitment guidelines.

Deadline Is August 31

With the application portal already open, eligible teachers have a limited period to submit their applications.

The deadline is midnight on Monday, August 31, 2026. TSC has made it clear that late or manual applications will not be accepted.

The recruitment represents another major step in the government’s attempt to stabilize staffing in Junior Schools and strengthen the implementation of Competency-Based Education.

For unemployed teachers, the 20,000 vacancies could provide one of the biggest employment opportunities in the teaching profession this year. For serving interns, the recruitment also comes amid wider government plans to move thousands of teachers from temporary internship arrangements to permanent and pensionable employment.

With thousands of applicants expected to compete for the available positions, teachers are advised to verify their eligibility, prepare their academic and professional documents and submit applications early rather than waiting until the final day.

The official TSC online recruitment system is available through the Commission’s online services portal.
