Tragedy in Manyatta: Mechanic Crushed by FAW Lorry

A sombre mood engulfed Manyatta Market in Embu County on Saturday morning following the tragic death of a popular local mechanic, identified as Kenne Wa Rasta.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred at around 8:09 AM along the Manyatta–Mutunduri road near Kigari, when a FAW tipper lorry he was working on unexpectedly slipped from its hydraulic jack and fatally struck him on the head.

The late Kenne, known across the Manyatta area for his mechanical expertise and friendly nature, had been conducting routine repairs beneath the truck when the jack reportedly gave way, causing the vehicle to crash down on him. Residents and bystanders rushed to the scene but were unable to save him.

“We heard a loud crash and when we got closer, we saw him pinned under the front part of the truck. It was devastating,” one witness recounted.

Photos from the scene show dozens of shocked onlookers surrounding the FAW lorry, with emotions running high as many struggled to come to terms with the sudden loss. Some residents could be seen consoling each other, while others expressed concern over safety practices in local roadside garages.

Local authorities responded promptly, and the body of the deceased was taken to a nearby mortuary for further examination.

This incident has reignited conversations around workplace safety standards for informal mechanics, especially those operating in open, unregulated environments. Community members have urged the county government to introduce stricter enforcement of safety guidelines and provide better training and tools to prevent similar tragedies.

Kenne Wa Rasta leaves behind a young family and a community that fondly remembers him for his dedication, skill, and kindness. Plans for his burial are currently underway.
