The Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) has officially called off its industrial action involving employees of the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) and the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), marking a significant turning point for Kenya’s aviation sector. The decision follows constructive engagements between union leaders, the respective management teams, and the Ministry of Roads and Transport, culminating in a mutually agreed return-to-work formula.

In a press release dated 17th February 2026, KAWU confirmed that the strike had been suspended after meaningful dialogue addressed key concerns raised by aviation workers. The industrial action had threatened to disrupt airport operations and air travel across the country, affecting passengers, airlines, and businesses reliant on aviation services. With the strike now called off, normalcy is expected to return swiftly to airports and aviation facilities nationwide.

KAWU expressed sincere regret for the inconvenience and disruption caused to passengers and the country at large. The union emphasized that it never intended to paralyze the aviation sector but was compelled to act after repeated efforts to seek dialogue were frustrated. According to the statement, the union had issued ample notice to the respective management teams outlining employees’ concerns and requesting negotiations. However, when those efforts did not yield satisfactory progress, workers exercised what the union described as their constitutional right to industrial action.

A key outcome of the return-to-work agreement is a major milestone for KCAA employees in Job Groups 4 and 5. Under the new arrangement, these employees will now be allowed to join the union and enjoy full union representation. This development resolves a long-standing recognition matter and paves the way for inclusive representation of all aviation workers under KAWU. Labor experts note that expanded union representation often strengthens collective bargaining frameworks and enhances communication between management and staff.

Additionally, all outstanding issues affecting KCAA and KAA employees, as raised in the union’s respective strike notices, will be addressed through a structured reconciliation process. This process will be overseen by a conciliator appointed by the Ministry of Labour, ensuring transparency and fairness in resolving disputes. The agreement also includes a critical assurance that no employee will be victimized, intimidated, or subjected to disciplinary action for participating in the lawful industrial action.

The aviation industry plays a crucial role in Kenya’s economy, serving as a gateway for tourism, trade, and regional connectivity. Any prolonged disruption would have had ripple effects on international travel, cargo operations, and investor confidence. Stakeholders across the sector have welcomed the resolution, viewing it as a positive demonstration of dialogue triumphing over prolonged conflict.

KAWU lauded the solidarity shown by its members during the industrial action and reaffirmed its commitment to constructive dialogue, fair labour practices, and the protection of workers’ rights within the aviation sector. The union directed all its members to resume duties immediately and continue delivering services with the dedication that defines Kenya’s aviation workforce.

Industry observers say the outcome highlights the importance of structured labour relations and proactive communication in preventing future disruptions. The involvement of government representatives, particularly from the Ministry of Roads and Transport and the Ministry of Labour, underscores the state’s role in safeguarding both economic stability and workers’ rights.

For passengers and airline operators, the announcement brings relief after days of uncertainty. Flights are expected to operate on normal schedules as airport and aviation authority staff return to their stations. Travelers are nonetheless advised to check with their respective airlines for any residual scheduling adjustments as operations stabilize.

The resolution of the dispute may also signal a new chapter in labour relations within Kenya’s aviation industry. By addressing recognition issues and committing to a formal conciliation process, both union and management have set the stage for more sustainable engagement going forward.

As aviation workers head back to work, the broader message is clear: while industrial action remains a powerful tool for labour advocacy, dialogue and compromise remain essential for maintaining industrial harmony. The agreement between KAWU, KCAA, KAA, and government stakeholders demonstrates that even high-stakes disputes can be resolved through negotiation, safeguarding both workers’ welfare and national economic interests.

With services resuming and a framework for resolving outstanding matters now in place, Kenya’s aviation sector appears poised to regain stability and continue supporting the country’s growth trajectory.
