In a major boost to Kenya’s agriculture sector, Russian and Algerian fertilizer donations have saved Kenyan farmers billions under the government’s subsidy programme, according to Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura.

Speaking during a press briefing, Mwaura revealed that Russia had donated a staggering 33,835 metric tonnes of fertilizer raw materials. These were locally blended to produce over 2 million bags of subsidized fertilizer targeting key crops such as maize, tea, and rice.

“This generous donation from Russia has helped our farmers save an estimated Ksh 2 billion. The government remains committed to cushioning farmers from high input costs,” Mwaura told reporters.

But the fertilizer windfall did not end there.

Algeria also joined the effort, donating 16,000 metric tonnes of urea, which was used to manufacture 561,000 bags of top-dressing fertilizer. According to Mwaura, this contribution helped farmers save an additional Ksh 729 million.

“These donations are a direct demonstration of the strong diplomatic ties Kenya enjoys with global partners. Our farmers are the biggest winners as this support has significantly lowered production costs,” Mwaura noted.

The fertilizer subsidy programme has been a lifeline for many smallholder farmers struggling with rising input costs, and the recent donations have eased the burden just in time for the planting season.

Local farmers have welcomed the initiative, hailing the government for facilitating affordable access to essential farm inputs. “Fertilizer prices had become unbearable. The subsidized bags have made it possible for us to prepare for the planting season without borrowing heavily,” said Joseph Mwangi, a maize farmer in Uasin Gishu.
